The first week of the 2017-2018 school year is now in the books and I am most pleased to share that it was indeed a very successful week. We did have a few conduct items to resolve (e.g. dress code) as expected, but they were few. Our Knights are now well underway on what promises to be a very bright academic school year!

This past week we also announced both our Support Person of the Year and Teacher of the Year (story below). Should you happen to see Mrs. Baez or Mrs. Jennings on campus this week, kindly take a moment to say congratulations. We are quite proud of both these well deserving staff members.

Our first School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting of the year will be held Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m. This is a very important group at LNMS helping to shape our annual School Improvement Plan (SIP) and prioritize school needs. The SAC is open to all members of our school community and while it requires very little individual time, its efforts have a powerful impact on the school.

Thank you again to our students, teachers, staff, and parents for an excellent opening week to 2017-2018!

In KNIGHTS Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Knight Guidance
Tips to Help Students Transition to Middle School Successfully
  • Lake Nona Middle School provided each student with a planner last week. Parents can help support good organizational skills by insisting their child use their planner to record all homework assignments and then check the planner each night.
  • Consistency matters! Set a time and place for homework and study. Parents and students should pick a time and place where homework is completed every day. The area should be as free from distractions and have all necessary supplies readily available.
  • Familiarize yourself with the course syllabus. The syllabus provides information about classroom policies, procedures, expectations and timelines for major classroom projects and assignments.
  • Check grades on ProgressBook at least once a week. You can also set alerts on ProgressBook so that you will receive an email anytime an assignment is missing or a grade is low. You can set this up by clicking the home tab after you log in. At the bottom of the page you will see "manage alerts".  ProgressBook login information was distributed on Friday, August 18th during 7th period.

Knight Clubs

Best Buddies is a new club for LNMS sponsored by Coach Kevin Hermida. Best Buddies is the world's largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

These programs build one-to-one friendships between middle school students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), offering social mentoring while improving the quality of life and level of inclusion for a population that is often isolated and excluded. Through their participation, people with IDD form meaningful connections with their peers, gain self-confidence and self-esteem, and share interests, experiences and activities that many other individuals enjoy.

Check out their website and consider being a Best Buddy!!

Club Rush
This week students will be able to review club information being offered at LNMS. Sponsors will display the goal of their club and offer registration and applications to join. Some organizations have special criteria to be able to join such as the National Junior Honor Society ( application on LNMS website) or the National Junior French  Honor Society. Many of our clubs have open registration such as Law Honors Society, Math Club or the NONA Science Club. The information will be available during lunch next week.

Knight Safety

As many of you know, there is a rare solar eclipse occurring next Monday, August 21. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our students, all outdoor activities including extended day, physical education classes, and athletic practices will be held indoors from 1:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. The only exception will be for special lessons planned by teachers who provide approved protective eyewear and use proper safety procedures.  Principals must approve any such lessons. Principals will also encourage teachers to use televisions and computers to view the coverage of the eclipse in their classrooms.

Schools will dismiss at their regularly scheduled times Monday and students will be reminded of proper safety procedures for their trip home. Please help us remind children that it is never safe to look directly at the sun especially during a partial eclipse.

If you want your child to view the eclipse at home, you can pick them up after 12 p.m. or keep them at home - for an excused absence. A simple note from you can be submitted for the excuse.  Details about viewing the eclipse are available on NASA's website.  https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety

Monday's Motivational Moment

NO SHORTCUTS

William Danforth, who became the owner of the huge Ralston Purina Company, learned a lesson about success when he was a young man. He said, "When I was sixteen, I came to St. Louis to attend the Manual Training School. It was a mile from my boardinghouse to the school. A teacher, who lived nearby, and I would start for school at the same time every morning. But he always beat me there. Even back then I didn't want to be beaten, and so I tried all the shortcuts. Day after day, however, he arrived ahead of me. Then I discovered how he did it. When he came to each street crossing, he would run to the other curb. The thing that put him ahead of me was 'just that little extra.' "

There are no shortcuts
to any place worth going.
