Welcome to the November 2016 edition of the Sandy Springs E-Newsletter, a publication that highlights news and events happening within the City. TSPLOST ON THE BALLOT
Transportation is an issue facing every person in the metropolitan area.  Voters in Fulton County (outside the city of Atlanta) will vote on November 8 on a 0.75 cent sales tax dedicated to transportation purposes. 

The 5-year 2016 TSPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for Transportation) Referendum on the ballot for Fulton County voters proposes an investment of $569 million in transportation improvements: congestion relief, maintenance and safety, operations and safety, bridges, and pedestrian/bike improvements throughout Fulton County with more than $100 million designated for projects here in Sandy Springs.  For more information on local projects and  TSPLOST, visit the page on the City's website

Please note Election Day is Tuesday, November 8, 2016 with early voting ending Friday, November 4, 2016.

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU
The more than year-long planning for the City's next ten years is winding towards the finish line.  The latest revisions to the Comprehensive Land Use Plan are online at  www.thenext10.org .  The City will host community meetings on Wednesday, November 16th at 9:30 a.m. - noon at Chastain Horse Park located at 4871 Powers Ferry Road. A second town hall meeting will be held later that same day from 5:30 - 8:30 at the Sherwood Event Facility located at 8610 Roswell Road.  During these workshops, the Next Ten planning team will provide a short presentation highlighting recent changes to the plan as well as provide time for the community to provide additional input.
VETERAN'S DAY TRIBUTE
Former WSB-TV news anchor John Pruitt returns as emcee hosting the City's 7th Annual Veteran's Day Celebration on  Friday, November 11 at 11:30 a.m.  a t the Concourse Corporate Campus.  USMC CWO5 Edwin E. Harman III will deliver the keynote address. The event honors those who have served our country as a member of the armed forces.   For more information visit the City's website .
STAY NOTIFIED 
Sandy Springs Alerts is a recently launched tool helping to keep community members notified.  You can sign up and receive a weekly update on lane and road closures planned ahead, notifications of emergency road closures, and be included on public safety notifications for things like severe weather.  You opt-in to the types of notifications you want to receive.  Also a part of the system is Smart911, which provides first responders with critical information about you and your home at a time when every second counts.  To learn more and sign up, 
PARENT / TEEN DRIVING CLASSES OFFERED BY SSPD
PRIDE Program - Teen in Car
In an effort to reduce teen vehicle crashes and keep the streets safer in our community, the Sandy Springs Police Department offers a free Parent/Teen Driving Class. 
The class is designed for parents to attend with their teenager(s). Classes are for new drivers ages 14-1/2 to 17. The topics covered include: Crash Dynamics, Occupant Protection, TADRA, Joshua's Law, and Distracted Driving. There is also a breakout session for teens to get together apart from the adults and discuss topics such as high risk driving behaviors, and for parents to discuss topics such as coaching a new driver and tips for driving practice. The next class is scheduled for November 30 from 6 - 8:15 p.m. Classes are held at the Sandy Springs Police Department Headquarters at 7840 Roswell Rd, Suite 301. KEEP YOUR CAR AND VALUABLES SAFE
Car break-ins are on the rise, and there are two things you can do to keep your vehicle and personal items safe:   Remove or hide any valuables before exiting your car and lock-the-door. Don't make it easy for thieves to take your belongings.

RECREATION AND PARKS 
DISCOVER NATURE - SATURDAY SERIES AT LOST CORNER
Naturalist Megan Clark will lead this series of environmental-based education classes, with meetings twice a month on Saturdays, through November.
Participants will have the opportunity to spend time outdoors and learn about a variety of nature topics through exploration and hands-on learning experiences. Each class will include a hike, investigation and games.

Class times are
  • 10-10:45 a.m.  Nature Tykes (ages 4-5)
  • 11-11:45 a.m.  Nature Kids (ages 6-9)

PARENTS NIGHT OUT - GYMNASTICS
Recreation and Parks Gymnastics Program Parents can enjoy a night out while their child has a blast learning gymnastics! The evening includes a meal, arts and crafts and gymnastics! Children in K-6 can enjoy the fun on Friday, November 4, 2016 from 6-10 p.m. at the Sandy Springs Gymnastics Center. The cost is $20 per child.
GYMNASTICS CLINICS
Does your child aged 5-18 want to master a specific skill? Want more practice time in the gym? The Sandy Springs Gymnastics Center is hosting a Beam clinic on November 19. Times are 2-4 p.m for ages 5-7 and the cost is $25, 2-5 p.m. 8 and older and the cost is $35.

Foodies Rejoice! It's time again for the annual Savor Sandy Springs Restaurant Week! 
Sandy Springs offers a vast selection of dining options, and Restaurant Week 2016 is the perfect time to get out and try something new. Participating restaurants will offer exclusive menus that provide diners the opportunity to taste appetizers, entrees, desserts and other tasty treats at special Restaurant Week prices. THE ELEGANT ELF MARKETPLACE
The 6 th annual Elegant Elf Marketplace, presented by the Sandy Springs Society, returns on this year Saturday and Sunday, November 5-6 showcasing over 85 carefully selected local and regional vendors.  This year's event will feature holiday performances and seasonal music from local school and civic groups, book signings by Emily Giffin and Walter Reeves, chef demonstrations by Souper Jenny and Chef Yuji Kurimaru of Bishoku, festive raffle packages and even a signature lunch at the Polar Express CafĂ©.  The Elegant Elf Marketplace hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday at Lake Forest Elementary School, 5920 Sandy Springs Circle. $5 entrance fee and children 10 and under are free.  Easy access parking is free.  Please visit www.sandyspringssociety.org for more information.
FOOTPRINTS FOR THE FUTURE 5K AND 40-YARD DASH
Sandy Springs Education Force presents its 3rd Annual Footprints for the Future 5K, on Saturday, November 12 beginning at Lake Forest Elementary School. The event is a certified Peachtree Road Race Qualifier featuring a NEW faster, flatter course winding through Sandy Springs near City Walk.  NEW this year - 40-Yard Dash for ages 18 and under! 
SECOND HELPINGS ATLANTA'S TASTE OF THE TRUCK
Second Helpings Atlanta (SHA) will host  its first annual  TASTE OF THE TRUCKS , a food truck festival, on  Saturday, November 12, from 11am-7pm on the field at the Concourse (corner of Peachtree Dunwoody and Hammond Drive near the King and Queen buildings).  TASTE OF THE TRUCKS will feature more than 15 of Atlanta's favorite food trucks, an  Arts and Crafts Market , great  live music and a  Kids Zone . Children of all ages can participate in a community service project  assembling bag lunches and decorating bags that will be delivered to SHA Partner Agencies.  Proceeds from this event will support SHA's continued growth and important work the organization does in the community throughout the year.  General admission tickets are $5 in advance, and $10 at the door. Free parking is available; for a small additional fee, valet service and access to a VIP Tent are offered. RIBBON CUTTING AT PAINTING WITH A TWIST
Members of the Sandy Springs Perimeter Chamber of Commerce and the City's Economic Development team officially welcomed Painting with a Twist to Sandy Springs.Described as fun art, not fine art, Painting with a Twist offers instruction and/or a great place to celebrate with friends. This latest location for the franchise is located at Marsh Creek Village at 6780 Roswell Road. 
RIBBON CUTTING AT HUEY LUEY'S
Mayor Paul lent his ribbon cutting expertise at the official opening of Huey Luey's Mexican restaurant. Located at 6650 Roswell Road in the former Staples location, this is the third location in the metro area. Known for traditional favorites like tacos, burritos, fajitas and nachos, the restaurant also offers Southern BBQ brisket tacos and grilled wings.
