Singapore Educators Visit BCNC

BCNC was chosen by Wheelock College as a site to learn best practices in child care. Two Directors of Early Education and Care Programs in Singapore visited BCNC to learn about our work with children and families. Both women came with specific questions to help guide their observation. This partnership was made possible by Wheelock College, a top ranked institution for training Early Education and Care professionals.
Reading Club in Quincy

The Parent-Child Reading Club meets every Friday at the Quincy Thomas Crane Public Library. Each week, our staff select two books to read, and after, lead a discussion and activities based on the books' topics. Eight families with over ten children regularly attend, including one native American dad with his child and seven immigrant moms with their American born children. The club's goal is to provide an opportunity for parents to learn about their child's reading level, promote their child's interest in reading stories about Chinese culture, and encourage parent-child communication and connections.
Youth Professional Development Day

On Saturday, Nov. 5, our young professionals network, the Bamboo Circle, organized their annual Professional Development Day for BCNC youth. 15 youth and 25 volunteers attended, including volunteers from State Street and Wellington Management. The 2-hour event featured an Interview 101 presentation, as well as a resume review and mock interviews where youth were able to practice their English skills one-on-one with volunteers. Special thanks to our volunteers for equipping youth with new professional skills!
Thanks for Sending Families Apple Picking

Thanks to your donations, 21 families -- most with children with special needs or brain injuries -- went to Carlson Orchards to pick apples, eat apple cider donuts, and drink warm cider. While parents were thankful for the opportunity to see the vibrant fall leaves, their children especially loved going on hayrides and playing in the pumpkin patch!

BCNC Portraits: Elsa Solis

Before coming to the U.S., Elsa Solis worked as an Executive Secretary in El Salvador. Because of her limited English language ability, she could only find employment at Dunkin Donuts. Elsa was determined to have the same position she had in her native country, so she turned to BCNC for support. Through our ESL Customer Service Job Training Program and English classes, Elsa is one step closer to making her dreams a reality. "BCNC is a wonderful place because they help students grow and develop, as well as impact the community. Right now, we are learning. But after we leave here, we will help the community, the country, and the world."
