Local Celebrity to Emcee Charity Event
Fontana, Wisconsin, Friday, December 2, 2016. Open Arms Free Clinic, the first and only free medical clinic in Walworth County, is celebrating its 4th Birthday this December 2nd with an evening of gratitude to commemorate treating its first patient at the free clinic in December 2012. At only $50 a ticket, the night is a fun-raiser and fund-raiser hosted by the generous staff at the Abbey Resort and Spa (269 Fontana Blvd, Fontana), tickets can be purchased online at
www.openarmsfreeclinic.org
.
The event emcee will be Kate Chappell, the Morning News Anchor at CBS 58 in Milwaukee. Kate grew up in Walworth County. She graduated from Big Foot High School. She then went on to study Journalism and Political Science at UW-Madison. Prior to joining CBS 58, she worked in South Bend, Indiana as a morning anchor and reporter. Kate is happy to be back in her home state covering stories that matter. She enjoys getting back to the Lake Geneva area to see her family, who still lives there, whenever possible. Watch Kate weekday mornings from 4:30-7 a.m.
The honorary chairs are the local champions who have received countless awards throughout the years for their generous gifts of leadership and community service. Karla and Brent Tildahl have been loyal volunteers with Open Arms Free Clinic from when it was just an idea back in 2011. Karla serves as the Nurse Manager and is responsible for the orientation and scheduling of all volunteer nurses. Karla says, "The people that I work with are a joy! I come to the clinic each day and feel better myself, just being here." Brent is the Clinic Keeper Manager and is responsible for the weekly housekeeping at the clinic. He and his volunteer crew ensure the clinic is a clean and hospitable place ready to welcome each person who walks through the doors. Karla and Brent believe that OAFC is a real asset to Walworth County and proud to be part of this fine organization.
The 4th Annual Birthday Gala Dinner is entitled, "An Emerald Affair for Compassionate Care" inspired by the Tildahl's 55th Wedding Anniversary also celebrated this December. The annual Open Arms Free Clinic charity event expects 450 guests and are grateful for the generous contributions by Flagship Sponsors Alder Scherer, LLC and Mercy Health Care, and Emerald Sponsors Aurora Health Care, BMO Harris Bank, and Gretchen Geist & Brad Meyers. According to Open Arms Executive Director Sara Nichols, "As a private non-profit, our work is supported totally by donations and grants. In supporting us through individual, corporate, and event-based giving, the community is also supporting the countless volunteer hours provided us by local doctors, dentists and other medical professionals who have selflessly served over 2,000 patients in our four short years."
Open Arms Free Clinic, Inc is a community based not for profit 501c3 charitable organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. The clinic treated its first patients on December 6, 2012 by providing free health care with dignity and respect to individuals who did not have health insurance, live in Walworth County, and with a household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. The available services at Open Arms have now come to include not only medical care, but dental, vision, behavioral health, pharmacy, lab and specialty in house services ie, ultrasound, cardiology, orthopedic, physical therapy, general surgery consults and referrals.
The clinic derives all its operating income solely from private donations, foundations, grants, and fundraising events. To date the total number of volunteers exceed 450. Between 2012-2016, these community minded doctors, nurses, pharmacists, advocates and clericals have served well over 20,000 hours. The clinic has enrolled over 2,000 patients and the total number of patient visits is rapidly approaching 3,000 annually. Today the top three communities utilizing clinic services are Lake Geneva, 32%, Delavan, 27%, and Elkhorn at 14%.
In spite of the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA/"Obamacare) there are still well over 8,000 people living in Walworth County who do not have any form of health insurance coverage. Open Arms Free Clinic is well aware the need continues and will remain Walworth County's first "safetynet" healthcare provider dispensing services with compassion, advocacy, and understanding.

Young Auditorium Welcomes Church Basement Ladies: Away in the Basement
Sunday, December 11
Pre-show dining option at 12:30 p.m.
Whitewater, Wis - The unforgettable Church Basement Ladies return to Young Auditorium this holiday season with the comedy musical Away in the Basement: A Church Basement Ladies Christmas. There will be two performances on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Away in the Basement
features four distinct characters as they organize food and solve their problems. Set in a rural Minnesota church about to undergo changes in 1965, the ladies in their witty, down to earth styles are content on doing things the way they have always been done, but are pondering new ideas as they prepare for the Sunday School Christmas Program. Little do the Church Ladies know the surprises that are in store for them as they are called to save the day!
A special pre-show dining option is available at 12:30 p.m., featuring a church basement-inspired menu including tossed salad, beef tips with marsala mushroom gravy, chicken breast with spinach and sundried tomatoes, creamy whipped potatoes, rice pilaf, green bean casserole and double chocolate cake.
Away in the Basement: A Church Basement Ladies Christmas
is based on the book Growing Up Lutheran by authors and humorists Janet Letnes Martin and Suzann Nelson. The Church Basement Ladies have grown to be one of the most successful shows produced both locally and nationally by
Troupe America in its 25-year history. Executive producer and Director Curt Wollan has a great creative team to bring the best out in the material. Greta Grosch wrote and the developed the script while Drew Jansen acts as the composer and songwriter. Finally, the musical comedy was created by Jim Sotwell, Jessica Zuehlke, and Drew Jansen.
