Bob Gain, a 1980 College Football Hall of Fame inductee and one of the greatest players in the history of University of Kentucky, passed away Nov. 14 in Willoughby, Ohio. Born June 21, 1929 in Akron, Ohio, he was 87.

Playing for Hall of Fame coach Paul "Bear" Bryant from 1947 to 1950, Bob Gain excelled as a two-way starter at tackle while also serving as the Wildcat's placekicker. He helped lead the Wildcats to a four-year record of 33-10-2 and the Cats' first three bowl appearances in school history. In 1950, Gain became the first player in SEC history to win the prestigious Outland Trophy as the nation's best interior lineman.
The NFF announced that GE Chairman & CEO Jeff Immelt will be recognized with the 2016 NFF Legacy Award during the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Dec. 6 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. The NFF Legacy Award, established in 2007, honors individuals and organizations who have made extraordinary contributions to the NFF and/or embody its mission.

"Nobody better represents our mission than Jeff Immelt," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "A former offensive tackle at Dartmouth, he has paid tribute on countless occasions to the role football has played during his business career, and he has continuously given back to protect the game for the next generation, taking on leadership roles with our Football Matters campaign and again with the recent creation of the Congressional College Football Caucus in Washington, D.C. He has become a true ambassador for the game, and we are extremely grateful."
The NFF announced that veteran sports journalist  Bonnie Bernstein  will serve as the moderator for the NFF Annual Awards Press Conference from 9 a.m. to Noon ET, while College Football Hall of Famer  Don McPherson  (Syracuse)  will emcee the NFF Chapter Awards Luncheon, presented by Under Armour, at 11:30 a.m. ET. Both events will take place Dec. 6 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.  
2016 College Football Hall of Fame electee Pat McInally (Harvard) was honored Nov. 19 with an NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute, presented by Fidelity Investments, during the 133rd Harvard-Yale Game. In 1974, he earned both NFF National Scholar-Athlete and First Team All-America honors. Click here to read more about McInally.

During the NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes, each inductee returns to his alma mater or school where they coached to accept a Hall of Fame plaque that will remain on permanent display at the institution. McInally will officially be inducted at the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner, held at New York City's historic Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

Alvernia University's Board of Trustees voted unanimously in October to introduce varsity football as a sport at its Reading, Pa., campus beginning in the fall of 2018. The team will compete at the NCAA Division III level, within the Middle Atlantic Conference, known as the MAC.

At a news conference announcing the decision, Alvernia President Thomas F. Flynn said he expects the addition of football to not only enhance the university's historically strong athletic culture but also attract students to majors in key liberal arts and professional fields that will complement its large, high-profile healthcare sciences programs.
Alabama again received all 45 first-place votes in Week 12 of the FWAA-NFF Super 16 Poll. Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson and Washington round out the top five in the poll, in which voters rank the top 16 FBS teams.

The results of the poll will be released every Sunday of the 2016 season and the individual votes of all members will also be made public. The final poll will be released Dec. 4. The pollsters consist of FWAA writers and College Football Hall of Famers.

NFF Board Member, AFCA Executive Director Emeritus and the 2016 NFF Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award recipient, Grant Teaffhas been chosen as the 2017 recipient of the AFCA's highest honor, the Tuss McLaughry Award.

College Football Hall of Famers Tony Boselli (Southern California) and LaDainian Tomlinson (TCU) and Hall of Fame coaches Don Coryell and Jimmy Johnson are among the 26 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2017. NFF Board Member and Dallas Cowboys Owner, President & General Manager Jerry Jones was previously announced as a finalist in the Contributor category.

College Football Hall of Famer  George Rogers (South Carolina)  has made a $75,000 commitment, through his foundation, to the Gamecock Student-Athlete Promise Fund.

College Football Hall of Famer and 1970 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Dave Elmendorf (Texas A&M) will be inducted into the State of Texas Sports Hall of Fame Feb. 21 in Waco, Texas. Also in the 2017 class are former football players Eric Metcalf (Texas) and Darren Woodson (Arizona State) and current NFL assistant coach and former Houston football player Wade Phillips.

1993 Campbell Trophy winner Thomas Burns (Virginia) led the Cavaliers out of the tunnel and ran the Virginia flag onto the field during their game at Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Saturday.


2016 NFF National Scholar-Athlete/Campbell Trophy Finalist Updates

Wide receiver  Tim Crawley  had personal single-game highs of 11 receptions for 147 yards in San Jose State's loss to Air Force on Saturday. He is now eighth on the Spartans' career receiving list. San Jose State closes out the 2016 season on Saturday, Nov. 26, at Fresno State. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.

Arkansas linebacker Brooks Ellis recorded six tackles, including one for a loss, and a pass breakup in the Razorbacks' 58-42 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday. Arkansas finishes off the regular season Friday, Nov. 25, at Missouri. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. ET on CBS.

Linebacker Carter Hanson  had a team-high 11 total tackles and an interception for Saint John's (Minn.) in its 32-31 win over Wisconsin-Platteville in the first-round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs Saturday. Hanson also earned the MIAC's Elite 22 Award for football for the second time in his career. The Johnnies advance to the second round, where they will play at Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 26. 

Quarterback Taysom Hill passed for 165 yards and rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown in BYU's 51-9 win over UMass on Saturday. Hill moved into fourth place on the Cougars' all-time rushing yards and rushing touchdowns lists. He also now has 74 career touchdowns responsible for, tying him for fifth all-time at BYU. The Cougars close out their regular season against Utah State for Senior Day Nov. 26 at 10:15 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Safety Ryan Janvion missed Wake Forest's loss to Clemson with a toe injury. The Demon Deacons will host Boston College Nov. 26 for Senior Day to end the regular season. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET on RSN.

East Carolina wide receiver Zay Jones set the FBS career receptions record (392) in the Pirates' loss to Navy Saturday. He also set the ECU single-season receiving yards record (1,685), and registered a personal best 212 receiving yards. Jones leads the FBS this season with 1,685 receiving yards, 153.2 receiving yards per game and 13.7 receptions per game. The Pirates will close out their season at Temple on Nov. 26. The game is set for 8 p.m. ET on ESPNews.

Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush Rush completed 25 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns as the Chippewas defeated Ohio, 27-20, to become bowl eligible last Tuesday on Senior Night. Rush now has 90 career touchdowns, which ranks fifth in MAC history. CMU finishes its regular season tomorrow night at Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Northern Iowa defensive lineman Karter Schult recorded seven tackles and a sack in a loss to South Dakota State, ending the Panthers' season. He finished the season leading the FCS with 17 sacks, recording at least one in 10 of the 11 games. Schult finishes his standout career as UNI's career leader with 56 tackles for loss and second with 37 career sacks.

Western Michigan quarterback Zach Terrell passed for a career-high 445 yards and four touchdowns, helping Western Michigan remain undefeated with a 38-0 victory over Buffalo on Saturday. For his efforts, he was named the MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week. Terrell became WMU's all-time leader for career passing yards, as he eclipsed the previous record of 11,329 held by NFF National Scholar-Athlete Tim Hiller. The No. 15 Broncos host Toledo on Friday, Nov. 25, with a spot in the MAC championship game on the line. The game is set for 5 p.m. ET on ESPNU.


NFF Program Updates

The NFF Scholar-Athlete of the Day, presented by Fidelity Investments, is a daily segment honoring the semifinalists for the 2016 William V. Campbell Trophy, presented by Fidelity Investments. Today's honoree is Miami (Fla.) punter Justin Vogel, who graduated in January with a 3.21 GPA in health sciences.

Over The Middle
The NFF  Touchdown Club of Houston Chapter held its Scholar-Athlete Luncheon on Nov. 16. Bryson Powers, a quarterback from Klein Collins High School (Texas) who is going to Harvard, received the chapter's Charles L. "Sonny" Sowell Award.

The NFF Southern Arizona Chapter will host a golf tournament on Dec. 3 at Omni Tucson National Resort to help raise money for scholarships. ESPN broadcaster and College Football Hall of Famer Tedy Bruschi (Arizona) is serving as the honorary tournament chair.

The NCAA announced an all-time high Graduation Success Rate for Division I college athletes... The 117th playing of the Army-Navy Game on Dec. 10 at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium is sold out... San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey passed College Football Hall of Famer Tony Dorsett (Pittsburgh) into third place on the all-time NCAA FBS rushing list with 6,127 yards. Pumphrey also became the first player in NCAA FBS history with at least 5,000 career rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards... Carson-Newman (Tenn.) head coach Ken Sparks announced his retirement after 37 years. He finishes his storied career with 338 victories, the fifth most all-time across all NCAA divisions... 55-year-old Joe Thomas Sr. saw action in South Carolina State's game on Saturday, and he is believed to be the oldest player to ever appear in a college football game... Air Force defensive back Weston Steelhammer, a former NFF National High School Scholar-Athlete, tied the school record with 17 career interceptions, and he is also the active-NCAA career leader...
