In the exquisite setting of our fall garden, hear the beautiful music of ancient instruments such as the koto (Japanese lute) and sheng (Chinese free reed wind instrument with bamboo pipes) when the Cal Arts Japanese Ensemble performs for us familiar and original compositions.
The ensemble was founded in 2015 at Cal Arts by koto musician and composer, Kozue Matsumoto, and her fellow students and lovers of Japanese sounds. Since then, this dynamic young group has been performing at various venues around Los Angeles, welcoming more members and expanding their repertoire.

Open Day Last Sunday in November will be an opportunity to see the garden with free admission. Members are always free, of course, but this is our way of thanking those who stay in touch with us on Facebook. All you need to do is LIKE our page (see the link below) and come on Sunday, November 27th, Thanksgiving weekend, so we can thank you in person.
Remember: The City of Pasadena prohibits our visitors from parking on the surrounding residential streets. Please follow the signs to park on-site. On Sunday Open Day, parking is also available in the lot we share with the Westridge School on Madeline Drive. It is accessible from Pasadena Avenue.
Open Day Last Sunday is from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Docent tour at 11:00.
Admission is $10:00 at the gate or you may make a reservation for $7.50 on our website. Members have free admission.
Children 12 and under are also free.The garden is wheelchair accessible. Sorry, no pets allowed.
Note: The garden will be Closed December 21 through January 4 and there will be no Open Days during that time. Happy Holidays!

#Giving Tuesday
is on November 29th!
It is another way to give and your donation will help us complete the Heavenly Path currently under construction over the hill where the waterfall is. On Tuesday, the 29th, donate any amount you want--$10, $25, $60--to help pay for the railing we need to keep people safe on the path. Give $100 or more and be treated to a special night of moon gazing when it's finished. You will find a Giving Tuesday link on the website to make your donation.
Tea and Talks

Enjoy tea and Japanese sweets with Yurie Halchak in the beautiful Niko-an teahouse. Yurie will give a talk while you have your tea, about the history and customs surrounding the teahouse and tea in Japanese culture. Space is limited, reservations are required and may be made on our
website on the Programs page.
Poets on Site invite you to stop by and take part in their weekly poetry workshops at the garden with beautiful flute music by Rick Wilson adding to the ambiance of the day.
Each week, Rick features a different flute--with its distinctive sound--from his extensive collection of historic flutes from around the world.
The poets gather from 1:30 to 3:30 to read their poems and walk in the garden for inspiration. Pick up their weekly newsletter at the check-in table for poems, photos and descriptions of the flute you will hear that week. Poets on Site was created and is led by Kath Abela Wilson. Look for her flowery hat and that is where you will find the poets.
Celebrate the Year of the Rooster with us on Open Day, Sunday, January 29
Join us in our beautiful garden for a day of music and art from Japan, China and Korea.
Learn to make Chinese paper lanterns; create Korean traditional paintings and tapestries; and see how ikebana is created using time-honored principles of Japanese flower arranging, all while listening to the uplifting melodies by the
Koto and Harp Duo

Jazz on Second Sundays!
Watch for the start of a new series of live jazz events arranged by well known jazz pianist and Pasadena resident, David Arnay. Gather on Sunday afternoons with some of the greatest jazz artists on the Los Angeles scene. More information in next month's email.

The Garden Opens For Classes On Fridays in 2017

Plein Air Watercolor Classes
Learn from Pete Morris, a local artist who has become widely known in the area, not only for his landscape paintings but his ability to capture life as it happens. An experienced teacher, Pete will guide students on their artistic exploration of this unique Japanese garden. Weekly classes start Friday, January 6 from 10:00am-12:00pm. The fee for a 10-week session is $175 per person.
Mindfulness Meditation
Instructor Debra Dysart will lead classes in the tranquil and healing environment of the garden. Debra is a teacher at the Shambhala Meditation Centers of Los Angeles. She also teaches Shambhala Art and is a former Director of Shambhala Los Angeles where she has been a practitioner for 20 years. Classes will be held in the Niko-an Teahouse from 8:30-9:30am starting Friday, January 13. For five classes, the fee is $50 per person; $25 for members.
Ikebana Classes
Learn the traditional art of Japanese flower arrangement. Classes will be led by Bokuho (Saeko) Kujiraoka, director of the Los Angeles branch of the Sogetsu School of Ikebana. Ms. Kujiraoka is a member of the Ikebana Teachers Association of Southern California. She has been teaching and creating ikebana since 1987. Classes will be held every Friday in the Niko-an Teahouse from 10:00am-12:00pm beginning January 6. The fee is $210 for 6 weeks.
Take a docent tour, free with admission at 2:00 p.m. on Open Thursday and 11:00 a.m. on Open Day Last Sunday. Reservations for the tours are not necessary but if there are more than six people in your group, please
email the garden to let us know.
Volunteer in the garden--it's a beautiful place to work. If you enjoy our programs, assist with events and attend for free. If you just like spending time in the garden, one way is to help with our Open Days. To apply, email your interest to:
