What You Believe

Scripture

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits on God's right hand in the place of honor and power.  Colossians 3:1 (NLT)

So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed  the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

John 2:22 (NASB)

For God so loved the world , that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.  John 3:16 (NASB)

"But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?" John 5:47 (NASB)

What You Believe

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the pivotal point of the Christian faith.  It is the dividing line between the "haves" and the "have-nots" of eternal life in heaven.

"When they heard Paul speak of the resurrection of a person who had been dead, some laughed, but others said, 'We want to hear more about this later.'"  Acts 17:32 (NLT)

Acts 26 reveals that King Agrippa listened to Paul until the apostle came to what we know as verse 23, that the messiah would suffer and be the first to rise from the dead.  Suddenly Festus shouted, "Paul, you are insane!"

Some years ago I was speaking to a group of women.  The subject was an important doctrine of the church.  One of the ladies said, "Pearl, you don't really believe that do you?"  Her remark carried the same connotation as the words of Festus: Pearl, you are crazy to believe that will actually happen.

Paul even used other people's belief and disbelief in the resurrection to get out of a jam.  The Pharisees and Sadducees had united to put Paul to death.  The Pharisees believed in the resurrection.  The Sadducees did not.  (This is why they are "sad you see.")  When Paul cried out that he was on trial because of his belief in the resurrection, the Pharisees jumped up to argue that Paul was all right.  The soldiers had to rescue him and take him back to the fortress.

"Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits on God's right hand in the place of honor and power" Colossians 3:1.

The litmus test of faith is when our manner of life proves that we believe and are united with Christ in His death and resurrection.

As you read the accounts of God's miraculous work through men and women in the Bible, you may wonder if God still performs such miracles today.  Be assured that the same God who walked with Moses, Joshua, Elijah, Peter, James, John, and Paul now lives within you.  No power can defeat the God who guides you.  The God who blessed them is just as capable for working out His purposes through your life.  The same God who gave them victory over seemingly invincible enemies, who provided for them when their own resources were insufficient, and who guided them in their decisions, is prepared to work as powerfully in your life today.  The heroes of the faith had one thing in common.  They were all ordinary people with no power of their own.  The difference is the mighty presence of God.  Times may change, but the effect of God's presence remains the same.

If Paul were here, he'd say something like this: "Stay the course.  Stay in Christ's school of freedom and holiness.  Stay, because not only has He already paid the tuition, but you can hardly imagine what graduation looks like-the glory that will be revealed."
Set your hearts on things above.  Set your minds on things above.
Look up.

Things Unseen: Living in Light of Forever
by Mark Buchanan

Most Christians believe and understand that Jesus' death on the cross was in payment for our sins.  But many people wonder why Paul included Jesus' burial as an essential part of the gospel.  Well, one reason is so we would know for certain that He was dead.
Now lest you think this is simply stating the obvious, I need to remind you that some people have tried to argue that Jesus never actually died on the cross.  He only fainted, and the coolness of the tomb revived Him, they say.
This theory says that Jesus then shook off the effects of all those beatings, the loss of blood from six hours of being nailed to a cross, and suffering a spear wound near His heart, then unwrapped His own grave clothes, moved a stone that weighed almost two tons, overcame a detachment of as many as sixteen heavily armed Roman guards, and escaped!  Ridiculous, isn't it?
The critics say that Jesus faked His death, and His disciples went along with the ruse even though they knew that their preaching about His resurrection was a lie.  The only problem is that they were willing to die for the gospel, and few people are willing to die for a lie when they know it's a lie.
