In this free, interactive workshop you'll learn the art, science, and skill of young tree pruning with Canopy's Program Director, Michael Hawkins, and other experienced arborists.
You'll also join a wonderful team of pruning volunteers that help maintain young trees throughout the community.

We are so proud to announce that Uriel Hernandez, our Community Forestry Coordinator, has received a "Local Hero" award from Bay Nature Magazine.
As a true "people person" and a bilingual member of the community, Uriel galvanizes East Palo Alto residents and community groups to create greener, healthier neighborhoods. Over the last year, Uriel has gone door-to-door in East Palo Alto to recruit local tree stewards. He's coordinated community tree plantings that bring together residents, volunteers, City employees, and local groups, all working together to green the community. So far, Uriel has helped residents and volunteers plant
138 new trees as part of Branching Out, with plans to plant 362 more over the next 4 years.
Congratulations, Uriel, and thank you for all your hard work!

Graham Middle School Trees & Understory Planting (Mountain View)
We had a great time partnering with Graham Middle School and local volunteer groups on October 8th! Together, we planted 8 new trees and 150 native landscape plants on the Graham school campus.
Special thanks to Dedra Hauser, who volunteered her expertise as a landscape designer; to Kammy Lo, who helped organize the school community; to Los Altos United Methodist Church for joining us as part of their Compassion Sunday; and to the entire Graham community.

University Village Neighborhood Tree Planting (East Palo Alto)
One of our biggest neighborhood tree plantings yet! On October 22nd, with help from 80+ residents and volunteers, we planted 70 new trees in East Palo Alto's University Village neighborhood, then wrapped up the day connecting with neighbors over barbecue in the park.
Special thanks to Will Schulz, our incredible tree champion who helped plan the day; to the many volunteer groups who came out; to Pit Bull Bar B Q for some delicious eats, and to City of East Palo Alto for their partnership.

Midtown Neighborhood Tree Planting (Palo Alto)
The first official tree planting for our new south Palo Alto initiative!
In partnership with the City of Palo Alto, Canopy is exploring ways to bridge the persistent gap in tree canopy cover between the City's north and south. During a pilot tree planting on October 29, volunteers planted 19 trees, with a mix of street and private yard trees.

New report: "Planting Healthy Air"
By 2050, more than half the global population will live in cities.
In an illuminating
new report, the Nature Conservancy points to trees as a powerful tool for improving public health in our increasingly urbanized world.
In particular, trees combat two key health threats: air polluted with particulate matter, and urban heat waves.
By absorbing particulate matter and other pollution, cooling the environment, and providing shade, city trees can save millions of lives.

California publishes a "how to" guide for Next Generation Science Standards
The NGSS, adopted in 2013, are designed to give students a hands-on, interdisciplinary learning experience, and prepare them for real-world scientific problem-solving.
Canopy is proud to deliver
outdoor, tree-centric lessons that meet NGSS standards. We're excited to use the new curriculum framework as a guide to further enhance our education programs.
