How TBF Works with Advisors

Laura Godine and the Philanthropy Group team are always available
to help advisors meet
their clients' charitable giving needs.

Donor Advised Funds
can be established with gifts of $10,000 or more

Advising in the Face of Uncertainty

Joshua S. Miller
You may have noticed there's a presidential campaign going on. It seems to have seeped into every conversation, pop culture outlet and thought for the future. Thinking futureward is the professional advisor's stock in trade, of course, so it seemed worth a look at how election fever might be affecting your practice or your clients.

The most striking thing about election season is the uncertainty that is introduced. That's true any election season, and may be more pronounced in one so zany as 2016's. "Client behavior has absolutely been different this election cycle," says Joshua S. Miller, Managing Director and Senior Wealth Strategist at Atlantic Trust Private Wealth Management, and an alumnus of the Boston Foundation's Professional Advisors Network. "So much is up in the air, and there are lots of differing opinions on which way the market will go."

Year-End Alert!

It happens every year: that acceleration from Veteran's Day to New Year's Day. Gifts mailed to the Foundation must be postmarked by December 31 in order to be recorded for this tax year. To ensure that gifts of securities are received into the Foundation's brokerage account before the end of the year, please ensure they are transferred by December 16 that they may be processed in time.

For questions regarding gifts, please e-mail  Fund Administration or call 617-338-2213.

Pledge 1% is a national corporate philanthropy movement dedicated to cultivating new stakeholders in support of local communities. It encourages and challenges individuals and companies to pledge 1% of equity, product and employee time for their communities. On September 28, we launched the first city-based chapter of the movement with Pledge 1% Boston. The Boston Foundation, along with partners TUGG Boston, Accomplice, and the Greenlight Fund, serves as the facilitator of Pledge 1% Boston.
Leading By Example:
Best Practices in Charitable Giving

On Thursday, October 20, the Boston Foundation, Boston College and Ropes & Gray LLP held the second daylong Leading By Example: Best Practices in Charitable Giving conference at UMass Boston. The conference opened with remarks from Kate Guedj, Vice President and Chief Philanthropy Officer at the Boston Foundation, and the keynote address was presented by Greg A. Shell, Managing Director at Bain Capital Double Impact Fund.

Themes for this year's conference included the intersection of public policy and charitable giving, impact investing, multi-generational philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, complex gifting strategies, navigating nonprofit board participation and mobilizing the legal, charitable, public and private sectors to create social change. The conference provided a forum for professional advisors, family office leaders, nonprofit professionals and donors to share their experiences, review recent developments, discuss best practices, learn from other experts and express their passion for philanthropy.

We're looking forward to exploring future events for best practices and current issues in philanthropy and social impact through the Leading by Example program.
