- Increase the understanding of faculty, teaching assistants, and academic staff as to what some students are experiencing in response to the election
- Provide resources and tools to support faculty in making their classrooms more inclusive for all students

hosted on November 10th, we will provide a space for instructors and staff in the Life and Physical Sciences to discuss the impact of the election on students and reinforce the importance of incorporating inclusive teaching practices in the classroom along with resources to do so.

Help Get the Word Out About LS110 - Career Exploration in the Life Sciences
|

UCLA has so many talented students who start out with intentions to major in the sciences, but for different reasons do not end up staying in the sciences. One way that UCLA is working to address this issue is through a course called LS110 - Career Exploration in the Life Sciences, a 2-credit upper division course where students learn about the many options available to them if they graduate with a degree in science.
Please help us get the word out! We have created a video with student testimonials about the course and FAQs are available as well. Here are some ways you can help:
- Option 1: Show this video in your class and encourage students to check out the course
- Option 2: Post the link below in CCLE for your students to view, or email it to them and encourage them to check out the course
- Option 3: Watch the video yourself so you can make an announcement about the LS110 course and share the direct link to the website with students who want to learn more during class

Photo Contest! Share your best fieldwork photos!

In an effort to expand their visual communication, NCSCE is launching a series of photo contests to source and highlight images that convey the broad scope of our community, their commitment to active learning strategies, and their belief in learning by doing.
For their first contest, NCSCE is seeking photos of students in the field. Does your course involve data collection at a local waterway? Do your students observe animals in their natural habitats? Does your campus have a student-run pollinator garden or grow its own produce?
Images that capture students engaged in fieldwork tell a larger story, and demonstrate, in a way that words alone cannot, how reformed teaching makes a difference.

About Journal Club: Participants explore relevant education literature in more depth and develop greater understanding of assessment techniques and data analysis methods. Presenters may select a paper and lead a discussion about how education researchers have documented the relationship between effective teaching practices and their impact on student learning, knowledge retention, and persistence in STEM majors. Alternatively, presenters describe classroom innovations and evidence-based instructional strategies they are trying in their own courses, soliciting feedback from participants while sharing their expertise in a variety of areas supporting instruction and assessment in STEM classrooms. WSCUC's Community of Practice for Advancing Learning Outcomes Visibility
Applications due by February 15, 2017
Starting in Spring 2017, with funding from Lumina Foundation, WSCUC is offering institutions an opportunity to participate in a free online Community of Practice to lend support, guidance, and consulting around projects related to assessing student learning and demonstrating visibility of that learning. Participating institutions will not only be able to gain support as they implement their own projects, but will also develop a collection of good practices, resources, and guides to share, both regionally and nationally.

The WSCUC Assessment Leadership Academy (ALA) prepares postsecondary professionals to provide leadership in a wide range of activities related to assessment of student learning, from facilitating workshops and supporting the scholarship of assessment to assisting administrative leadership in planning, budgeting, and decision-making related to educational effectiveness.

PULSE Fellows have published their first paper, "The PULSE Vision & Change Rubrics, Version 1.0: A Valid and Equitable Tool to Measure Transformation of Life Sciences Departments at All Institution Types"
The PULSE Vision & Change Rubrics, version 1.0, assess life sciences departments’ progress toward implementation of the principles of the Vision and Change report. This paper reports on the development of the rubrics, their validation, and their reliability in measuring departmental change aligned with the Vision and Change recommendations. The rubrics assess 66 different criteria across five areas: Curriculum Alignment, Assessment, Faculty Practice/Faculty Support, Infrastructure, and Climate for Change. The results from this work demonstrate the rubrics can be used to evaluate departmental transformation equitably across institution types and represent baseline data about the adoption of the Vision and Change recommendations by life sciences programs across the United States.

Engaging Mathematics has published manuals that help teachers incorporate civic issues such as sustainability, climate change, and water pollution into statistics, algebra, modeling, and other mathematics courses. Dr. Rikki Wagstrom, an Engaging Mathematics Institutional Partner and Associate Professor of Mathematics at Metropolitan State University, published a teaching manual containing two modules for use in either a standard Calculus I-II sequence or a one-semester applied calculus survey course.

UCLA Postdocs Longitudinal Investment in Faculty Training (UPLIFT)
The UPLIFT Program at UCLA supports postdoctoral scholars in the biological sciences who have a demonstrated interest in teaching, research, and supporting diversity in the STEM fields. UPLIFT combines a traditional mentored postdoctoral research experience with an opportunity to develop academic skills, including teaching and mentoring undergraduate STEM students, through workshops, courses, and a faculty mentored mentored teaching practicum at our partner institution Cal State Los Angeles.
The program is funded by an IRACDA grant awarded to UCLA from the NIH. UPLIFT is expected to facilitate the progress of postdoctoral candidates toward research and teaching careers in academia. Other goals are to provide a resource to motivate the next generation of scientists at our partner institution and to promote collaborations in research and teaching between faculty at UCLA and CSCULA.

Promoting Active Learning& Mentoring (PALM) Network Grant
The Promoting Active Learning & Mentoring Network Grant provides faculty and postdoctoral fellows with resources that allow them to gain hands-on experience and long-term mentorship in bringing evidence-based, effective active learning strategies into their own classrooms.
The grant can provide up to $2000 per fellow, $500 mentor stipend, or up to $1000 travel cost each for fellow and mentor.

HHMI Launches New Program for Early-Career Scientists
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) announced a new program to recruit and retain early-career scientists who are from gender, racial, ethnic, and other groups underrepresented in the life sciences, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Through an open competition, HHMI plans to select scientists early in their training to become Hanna H. Gray Fellows. Each fellow will receive funding for up to eight years, with mentoring and active involvement within the HHMI community. In this two-phase program, fellows will be supported from early postdoctoral training through several years of a tenure-track faculty position. In the first competition cycle, HHMI will select up to 15 fellows and invest a total of up to $25 million for their support over eight years.

Evaluate UR: Evaluating Undergraduate Research
If you, or someone of your campus is operating an intensive summer undergraduate research program, you may be able to participate in an NSF WIDER program (DUE 13-477227). Led by SUNY Buffalo State, the project seeks to refine and disseminate a successful model of undergraduate research assessment that has been in place at that institution since 2008. This model closely links the teaching and learning process in a unique design that has improved student learning while producing rich empirical evidence of program outcomes and student knowledge gains. The project is now seeking additional institutions to pilot the dissemination of this model. Interested campuses must have a summer undergraduate research program lasting from six to ten weeks in which students work with faculty mentors, a campus undergraduate research director or coordinator who oversees the program, and ongoing institutional support for continuing program operation.
