Vinyl Club Service Project

Mr. Bill Workman, Kelsey Haley,Summer Padilla, Danielle Lacayo, Lauren Riggan, Taylor Riggan, Patrick Burke, and Luke Evans.
Next week, the Vinyl Club will be collecting toothbrushes, toiletry items, gloves, mittens and socks for the needy who come to the St. Vincent de Paul Center. The idea came from Garces senior Danielle Lacayo who has recently began volunteering at the center.  She noticed how grateful people were to get items that others take for granted.  She decided she could make a difference, even if it was a small one.  She proposed the idea to the Garces Vinyl Club and they all agreed to participate.  They will be collecting items next week, Nov. 14th - Nov. 18th and placing them in a bin in Mr. Bill Workman's classroom.  As you are purchasing cans for the Canned Food Drive, maybe you can add in a toothbrush, toothpaste, or some socks into your cart.  They will go to good use and will be greatly appreciated.
Mock Elections at Garces

Students had to check in and confirm they were registered to receive their ballot.  Individual voting booths were set up so the students could vote in private. Pictures are: poll workers Setareh Etesham, Claudia Millar, Suzanne Padilla, and Molly Soper;. students picking up their ballots are Jacki Pierce and Jasmine Scott; students voting are Hutton Stewart and Mason Smith.

The results:
Donald Trump: 78%
Hillary Clinton: 16%
Gary Johnson: 4%
Jill Stein: 1%
Veteran's Day Celebration

On Wednesday, Garces held a special assembly to honor Veteran's Day. Students watched an amazing video created by Mr. Gino Lacava.  The video covered how Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the Star Spangled Banner and that our flag represents the lives of the men who fought at Fort Henry to keep the American flag raised in defiance of the British's demand. The video also explored all the conflicts American veterans fought in and many gave their lives for. We had several veterans in the audience and they came up and shared some of their story.  Mr. Brian Cobb made a flag that students could write down a family member who was a veteran or current military member.  Monsignor Michael Braun was on hand to bless the flag and the veterans and to lead us in prayer. To end it, we all sang "God Bless America".  Pictured is alumnus and Korean War Veteran Mr. Ken Peters '50 with his grandson Joe Tobias '17.

Dear Parents -

On Wednesday, we celebrated Veteran's Day with an all-school assembly.  Our Campus Minister, Mr. Brain Cobb organized an impactful hour that made all of us realize how truly fortunate we are to live in the land of the free and to have a safe and secure campus where we can openly practice our faith. And I, along with almost everyone else, learned something new about the Star Spangled Banner courtesy of a truly impressive video by Garces faculty member, Mr. Gino Lacava.  I am hopeful that by now your student may have mentioned it to you.  If not, please ask them as it offers a wonderful opportunity to discuss the freedoms we have in our country thanks to the veterans who served, especially those who courageously lost their lives so we could have the amazing opportunities and freedoms our country offers all of us.  For us at Garces, one of the most important freedoms allows us to work with our parents on the faith formation of their children and we are grateful to those who have served to preserve the rights we hold so dear.

On another note, our Fall Sports regular season has come to a close.  Thank you to all the team "moms" who volunteered countless hours.  You are appreciated more than you know.  Congratulations to all of our student athletes on a terrific season.  We had some SWYL League Champions - Varsity Girls Golf, Varsity Girls Tennis, JV Girls Tennis, and JV Football.  Congratulations to our varsity teams who all made it to valleys - Football, Volleyball, Boys Water Polo, Girls Water Polo, Girls Tennis and Girls Golf. Congratulations to Anastasia Drulias and Alexsia Drulias on their Girls Tennis Doubles Team Valley Championship and to Allie Crawley and Sydney Crawley on qualifying to play in the CIF SoCal Girls Golf Tournament. It's been a great Fall for our student athletes, their fans, and for The Herd.

We are in the middle of our Canned Food Drive.  Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for all that God has given us and a time to give back to those in need.  Thank you for in advance for helping us to make a large donation of non-perishable food items to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.  You can send in your canned goods through Friday, November 18th.

Next week, the Garces Players will perform in our Fall Play, "Leaving Iowa".  I am always impressed by the talent on our campus and I have no doubt that it will be a wonderful production.  The play will be performed on November 16th & 17th and I hope you will be able to join us in supporting our gifted actors and stage technicians.

Before we know it, Christmas will be here!  It is a joyous season and it offers us several opportunities on campus to celebrate the birth of our Lord.  We hope you will join us on campus for our evening Christmas Mass on December 14th.  There will be more details coming, but please mark your calendars.  The Mass will be for the entire Garces community.  Also, on December 15th, the Garces music program will perform its annual Christmas Concert. We would love to see all of our families on our campus two nights in a row.

As we wrap up the first semester, please go on-line and check your student's grades and assignments.  Please contact your student's teachers with any concerns or questions.  Your child's academic success is a priority to us and finals will be here before we know it.

May there always be a Garces.
