Sgt. Mark McGugan Named Director-Elect of Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run (OLETR)
Windsor, ON, NOVEMBER 23, 2016 - On behalf of the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run OACP Executive Committee I am happy to announce that Sgt. Mark McGugan from the London Police Service has been named Director-Elect of the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run effective January 28, 2017.  Mark will work closely and be mentored by current Torch Run Director S/Sgt. Kevin MacBean (Peel Regional Police) for a 6-month period at which time Mark will officially become the Torch Run Director on: June 11, 2017 for a 3 year term.

Mark is a truly dedicated and passionate member of the Law Enforcement Torch Run and under his leadership the London Police Torch Run Committee has excelled and achieved  new heights over the past few years.  In the role of Director, Mark will work closely with Special Olympics Ontario and the OLETR Operations Committee to ensure the continued success of one of the best Torch Run programs in the World!  As the Torch Run enters its 30th Anniversary in 2017, we are excited for what's ahead, while honouring the achievements of many officers who have contributed to this great cause since 1987.

Mark has been an active volunteer with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for over 27 years and has held many leadership positions within the organization such as: Area Coordinator (5 Years), London Police Coordinator (21 years), Zone Coordinator (12 Years) and Operations Committee Member (3 Years).  In addition, Mark has also sat on the Provincial Workshop Committee and was the Chair, 2010 National Summer Games Final Leg Committee.

Mark has also been recognized with the following Torch Run/Special Olympic awards:
2007: Award of Honour
2014: Inducted into Special Olympics Ontario Hall of Fame
2016: Distinguished Service Award

Who We Are
The Ontario Law Enforcement Torch RunĀ® (OLETR) is the largest public awareness vehicle and grass-roots fundraiser for Special Olympics. Known honourably as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes carry the "Flame of Hope" into the Opening Ceremony of local competitions, and into Special Olympics Provincial, National, Regional and World Games.  

What We Do
The OLETR for Special Olympics engages law enforcement worldwide championing acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities, starting first with their own communities. Over the years the Torch Run has evolved and now encompasses a variety of innovative fundraising platforms to include Polar Plunges, Tip-A-Cops, NHL Alumni Games, Torch Rides, Endurance Series and MORE! Since inception (1987 in Ontario), the OLETR has raised more than $35,000,000 and changed millions of attitudes.
