Implement Your Choice

Scripture

And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;

Romans 5:3 (NASB)

Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

James 1:12 (NASB)

Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.  For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.

Hebrews 10:35, 36 (NASB)

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.   James 1:2, 3 (NASB)

Implement Your Choice

When I was in college (back in the dark ages) we endlessly talked and heard many lectures and sermons about how to know the will of God for our lives.  The best advice we could have been given, in retrospect, was to tend to what God had given us to do at that time.

The Bible study and Greek classes, as well as reading, writing, and geology (which almost cut short my college career) were what I needed to focus on.  How well I learned, worked, and concentrated on the job at hand would have a definite bearing on my usefulness to God in the future.  My choices would be curtailed or limited if I did not take advantage of studying and putting into practice the subjects the dedicated teachers were diligently teaching in every class.

My grace is sufficient for you for my strength is made perfect in your weakness.  2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV)

That is a comforting verse, especially when we suffer from another person's wrong choices or our own mistakes.  The grace of God nurtures the one sinned against.  Grace becomes the "balm of Gilead that heals a sin-sick soul," for the one who is paying the price of his bad choices.  The wrong choices we make bring guilt, shame, and pain.  We know we brought it on ourselves but we usually accuse, place blame, or excuse our behavior because of the circumstances. When we work through the self-pity and anger, we begin to see some positive results.  We realize God is using our struggles to make us better people.  We will even thank Him for allowing us to grow and learn through the hard times.

"We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us - they help us learn to endure.  And endurance develops strength of character in us, and character strengthens our confident expectation of salvation....For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love."  Romans 5:3 - 5 (NLT)

"So comfort and encourage each other with these words"

1 Thessalonians 4:18 (NLT)

          MY RULE OF LIFE
to let no thought go unexpressed
That might give some one pleasure;
To say no word I might regret
In later hours of leisure;

To do the kindly, little deeds
That make life worth the living;
To overlook another's faults
Nor fail to be forgiving;

To strive to leave each task well done
And make a joy of duty;
Unceasingly to give God thanks
For life and love and beauty;

To honor God and, loving Him,
Love, as myself, my neighbor.
This, the high test of perfect love-
The goal toward which to labor.

Rainbows: The Book of Hope edited by George W. Humphreys

God grant we may get to the place where the only thing we take seriously is the place God has put us, watching, waiting steadfastly for God's goings.  Never take anything said by any man or woman, or in any book, without waiting and watching before God.  "Try the spirits," test them, see if they be of God.  I want you to beware of a mistake I have made over and over again of trying to interpret God's plan for other lives according to the way He has led me.  Never do this!  Keep open-eyed in wonder.  Can God do what He likes in your life?  Can He help Himself to you?  Can He take you up and put you down?  Can He introduce His schemes through you, and never tell you the reason?  Can He make you a spectacle to men and angels, as He did Job, without giving you any explanation?  Can He make you a wonder to yourself and to others, while He gives you the implicit childlike understanding that somehow or other things are working out all right?

If You Will Ask: Reflections on the Power of Prayer by Oswald Chambers

I love what Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the great British preacher, said: "It was by perseverance that the snail made it into the ark."  That sentence triggers a scene in my mind of other animals passing the snail by.  Most of them looked more elegant and prettier than the snail.  Virtually all of them were more swift.  But the snail eventually made it inside the ark anyway.  Perseverance is really the foundation of anything that takes place in life.  That's why I want to encourage those of you who are reading these words to never quit.  Hang in there.  Don't give up.  Your perseverance, your model of tenacity even in the midst of opposition and painful choices in life, is providing the fuel for the next generation.

       & Praises

1. Pray: By your endurance you will gain your lives.  Luke 21:19 (NASB)

2. Pray: To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Thessalonians 1:11 (NASB)

3. Pray: This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God's commandments and remain faithful to Jesus.  Revelation 14:12 (NIV)

5. Pray: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

6. Pray: Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.  1 Timothy 4:16 (NASB)
