HELP! Share your memories of Huffy
"lazy people work the hardest," his "grandmother's fried chicken," and more
Bill Huffman joined the staff of ACDS in 1976, straight out of a National Outdoor Leadership School program in Lander, Wyoming. Originally signing on as a teacher of physical education and social studies, he quickly built the landmark Outdoor Education program that has become such an enormous and central part of our school. Inspired and encouraged by Huffy, a generation of Aardvarks have ventured out into the wilderness. They have learned from the mountains, desert, lakes, and rivers of the American West, and also from this remarkable leader.
For the past few years, Huffy has been running the fall trips, then departing in October for a winter sojourn in a warmer climate. He would return in spring for the desert trips. Last year, after Huffy expressed his desire to pull back, and recognizing that this ambitious program requires
full-time staffing, the school embarked on a national search. Collette Newell began as full-time Director of Outdoor Education this summer. Huffy is in the valley (recovering well from shoulder surgery). He departs soon to spend the winter in Mexico.
Now it's
time to honor Bill Huffman with a proper salute. We are preparing a special tribute in the next issue of
The PONDS magazine and some events this year as well. You can help by sharing memories of your times with Huffy -- whether on the trail, on the ski slopes, in the school bus, or in the classroom.
