What is a Convention Card?

What is Convention Card? The ACBL requires that each player have a convention card available to their opponents which displays your agreements with your partner.  Sounds daunting but I have created a BAND Newbie Convention Card which is available for your use in the 49er Pairs.  You can use it for all of your games.  Don't play everything on the card? Just mark it off!  Ask Sharon for your copy.

Mentor/Mentee Program

BAND new Mentor/Mentee Program is growing like crazy and we hope that you will join in the fun and become a mentee and perhaps even a mentor to someone who has less experience at the game than you!

Some goals you may have that the BAND Mentor/Mentee Program can help you meet:
1. To feel more comfortable playing up at the next game level
2. To get to know more players
3. To understand the etiquette and proper behavior at the table
4. To understand director's rulings
5. To recognize strengths and identify areas of the game which may need more work.

If you think the BAND Mentor/Mentee Program is for you then
and we will find you a mentor to help you with your goals!
0-5 Free-Play Punch Card

A new program for 0-5 players is up and running and it includes a free play for you!

Just ask a BAND director for your very own 0-5 punch card and present it to the director each time you play.  Once you accumulate five punches, your 6th game is free!  Already used up one punch card, just pick up another one...It's that simple.

A Great Use of Gerber

You hold:

S. K Q J 10 9 5 4 3 2

H. K 4

D. 9

C. 7

Partner opens 1NT.  Once you check the back of your cards to make sure you and your partner have the same colored cards, you ask how high and where.  Well, the where looks like spades but could be notrump.  The how high depends on how many aces partner holds.  At first glance, it looks like you want to transfer to spades using Texas Transfers (if your partner plays that convention) or Jacoby transfers.  Once partner completes the transfer, you bid 4NT as Blackwood asking for aces.

If partner shows you four aces, then you bid 7NT!  If partner shows you three aces, then bid six spades.  If partner shows you two aces or one aces, then sign off in five spades.

Some of you might have noticed that if partner has only one ace, then that means the opponents have three aces and you are down one at five spades.  A very sad ending with such a beautiful suit.  The Gerber Convention comes to the rescue!

Over partner's 1NT, you jump to 4C (Gerber) asking for aces.  Since the bidding is a level lower, you can sign off in 4S if partner shows one or two aces and bid the small or grand slam if partner shows three or four aces, respectively.
