Can Nano fibers Replicate the Human Nose
Nano fibers are the newest technological wonder with 
applications in medical, aerospace, and
energy industries. Nano fibers are thousands of times smaller than the human hair. They have been woven to clothes to make electricity while you walk, injected into mice to filter cancer cells, and now thanks to a group of researchers from university of Utah have been made into an ultra-high sensitive gas sensor. According to the group Vaporsens the sensors can detect various compounds to parts per trillion level! How does it work? The nano fiber are designed and created to react to different molecules in the air. The high porous fibers act like traps to capture various molecules and provide an 
electrical signal that can be interpreted by the circuit as a 
detected gas. Not too different than our own nose in fact! 
How will this technology shape the future of odour monitoring? 
Time will tell but we are definitely excited to find out.

Energy Efficient Odour Control Strategies

Los Angeles's new odour control master plan outlines the
 use of various different technologies
such as chemical additives, bio trickling filters (BTF), and "air curtains" within the sewer network. The choice of each technology is application depend but what LA Bureau of Sanitation has demonstrated is that by using multiple technologies intelligently, it's possible to significantly reduce operating and capital cost of the odour control strategy. For example LA chose to section off problematic areas with air curtains and treat a smaller air volume thus reducing the size of the BTFs required saving capital cost and  energy consumption. The secret to a successful and energy 
efficient odour control plan is to not only utilize different  technologies but to do it intelligently based on complete and  thorough assessment of the current situation.

Merging VDI3940 Grid Method and In-Field Olfactometry to Obtain Complete Odour Impact Assessment. This study describes an enhanced method for the measurements of odour impact as per VDI3940 (VDI,2006), part 1. The methodology incorporates the use of the SM100i in-field olfactometer within the panel of
assessors to determine the odour concentration in the assessed site. The results from this enhanced method
will allow not only to understand the total odour load determined as per VDI3940 (VDI, 2006), but will also allow us to determine the odour concentration in terms of Odour Units obtained through a reliable in-field olfactometry protocol.
