Westland Mayor to Appoint New Parks and Recreation Director/Announces Additional Changes to Administrative Team
Westland, MI - A three-month search of potential candidates and qualified applicants has led to the appointment of Latricia Gunnells as the new Parks and Recreation Director, pending city council approval on October 3.  

Mayor Wild put together a team to interview applicants for the position which consisted of Deputy Mayor Thelma Kubitskey, Personnel Director Cindy King, City Council President James Godbout and Canton Leisure Services Director Debbie Honsowetz.  The search resulted in 25 applicants which led to 11 subsequent interviews which was narrowed down to a short list of applicants to interview with the Mayor.

"I believe Ms. Gunnells has the skills and experience to provide the leadership, vision and creativity necessary to rebuild our recreational programming and opportunities while also leveraging the partnership the City enjoys with various local athletic groups," commented Mayor Wild.

Gunnells, a Detroit native, is relocating from Oklahoma where she currently works as the Community Center Supervisor for the City of Oklahoma City.  Gunnells previously served as the Activities Director for the City of Tulsa and was the Assistant Women's Basketball Coach for the University of Tulsa.   She has been responsible for management of multiple facilities including community centers, indoor/outdoor public swimming pools, multiple playgrounds, athletic fields, disc golf courses and 20+ miles of rocks/boulders for repelling and training. She has managed staff ranging from up to 68 full-time staff along with 30 volunteers. Gunnells has successfully obtained grants including those from corporations such as K Mart, Wal Mart and others.  She has a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from St. John's University, and has nearly completed a Master's degree in Management and Sports Administration from Southern Nazarene University.

The interview team was unanimous in identifying Gunnells as their number one choice for the open Parks and Recreation Director position.



Mayor Wild is also announcing a number of other changes within his administration.  Current Executive Assistant to the Mayor, Thelma Kubitskey, will be filling the vacant Chief Business Development Officer position, which has been vacant since December of 2015.  Kubitskey has worked for the City of Westland since October of 2012 when she was originally hired as the city's Budget Director.  

Kubitskey possesses a Bachelors degree from Madonna University and retired from Northville Township after 32 years.  There, she worked as the Assistant Township Manager/Finance Director.  She has an extensive municipal finance background including completion of capital improvement projects such as construction of a new township hall.



Filling the vacancy for Executive Assistant to the Mayor will be current Wayne- Westland Fire Chief, Michael Reddy, J r.   Reddy has worked for the Westland Fire Department for nearly 25 years and has served as its Chief since May of 2001. He possesses a Bachelors Degree in Public Safety Studies.  

   

Assistant Fire Chief Michael Stradtner will be promoted to the position of Wayne-Westland Fire Chief.  Stradtner has worked for the Westland Fire Department for 22 years and has a Bachelors Degree in Healthcare Management and will begin working on his Masters in Organizational Leadership this year.  



The final change within the administration deals with the delegation of the city's Ordinance services. Department of Public Service Deputy Director Hassan Saab will oversee the transition of Ordinance which is currently being performed by the Westland Fire Department to a new department in next year's budget.    Saab has been with the City of Westland for 2 years and has 23 years of experience with Wayne County Department of Public Service.  He also possesses a Ph. D in Structuring Engineering and a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering.
