August 6, 2016 - August 14, 2016
Westland's 6th Annual Blues, Brews and BBQ -   Restaurants are lining up to participate in Westland's signature event of the year, Blues, Brews and BBQ at Thomas H. Brown Central City Park. Being held August 5 and 6 to take advantage of warm weather, Blues, Brews and BBQ will feature several talented musicians, including headliners Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials, Thornetta Davis and Westland's own Josh Gracin.  This year the event has added professional pit-master BBQ'ers Hill Billy Bone BBQ, Heaven on a Roll, Stick a Pig in it, Harold Ole Daddy BBQ, Smoke Ring BBQ and Uncle Bebe's BBQ with their professional on-site, slow cooked, authentic BBQ.  They will be joined by returning local favorites Famous Daves and Texas Roadhouse.  For some additions outside the tradition BBQ realm, we have Harvest Kettle Corn, Detroit Mini Donut and Lemonade, Heavenly Hot Dog and On the Border.  As in previous years, the event will also feature a wide selection of Michigan craft beers, and soft drinks. New this year will be the addition of a wine selection.   The event will begin on Friday, August 5 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and will continue on Saturday, August 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.  Saturday will also feature amateur and professional categories of the All American BBQ Throwdown starting at 12:00 a.m. with prizes being awarded at 3:00 p.m.  Parking for this event will be free this year at the 18th District Court, John Glenn High School and the William D. Ford Career Technical Center on Marquette and at the Westland Friendship Center, located at 1119 Newburgh Rd.  Free shuttle buses will be provided from the Marquette Rd. and Friendship Center locations on Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.  
 
But wait....there's more!  As a part of the City of Westland's 50th Anniversary Celebration the event closes with the largest fireworks display in the city's history on Saturday at 10 p.m.  This will be a musically choreographed fireworks display that you don't want to miss!

H20 Zone Closed to the Public - The H20 Zone will be closed to the public on Monday, August 8 beginning at 3:00 p.m.  Season pass holders only will be allowed admittance after 3:00 p.m.

Kroger Job Fair - Kroger is holding a nationwide hiring event.  Individuals seeking employment are encouraged to visit jobs.kroger.com and drop by any store on Tuesday, August 9 between 3-8 p.m. after applying online. There are 4 Westland Kroger locations:  36430 Ford Rd, 200 Merriman Rd, 7350 N. Mornings with the Mayor - Don't miss out on your opportunity to meet with Mayor William R. Wild and key members of his administration to discuss what's going on around the City of Westland.  This month's Mornings with the Mayor will be held on Tuesday, August 9 at the Westland Municipal Golf Course at 9:00 a.m.  After the meeting there will be a putting contest with gift cards being awarded to the winners.  This is your opportunity to share with the Mayor and his team the topics that matter to you most.

Streetlight Conversion Kick Off -  On Tuesday, August 9, the City of Westland and DTE Energy will be hosting an event to kick off their partnership on Westland's final phase of the mercury vapor street light conversion project.  The event will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will take place at Wildwood Elementary, located at 500 N. Wildwood.   This phase of the Mercury Vapor conversion project will convert 2,466 street light fixtures to LED on neighborhood streets throughout the city.  The total cost for this phase to the city is $435,173 with an annual savings of $260,364.  After this phase is completed the City of Westland will no longer have any mercury vapor streetlights.  The entirety of the project will be completed by September 1.

Household Hazardous Waste Day - Wayne County residents can bring unwanted household chemicals, cleaning products, automotive fluids, paints and stains, and old electronics to be properly disposed of absolutely free on Saturday, August 13 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Westland Shopping Center parking lot,  located  at 35000 Warren Rd.  For a complete list of what is excepted, please click here.  Don't miss out on this FREE opportunity to rid yourself of these unwanted items.

Be Proud!  Be Responsible -  On  Saturday, August 13 , the Westland Youth Assistance Program will be presenting a "Be Proud, Be Responsible" program for area teens.  This free program gives young people the information they need to make good choices when it comes to their relationships.  The program begins at 10:00 a.m. and students attending get a free lunch, special prize, and all of the required materials.  This event will take place at the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center, located at 32150 Dorsey St.  You can register by calling the Youth Assistance Program at 734-467-7904.

Parks and Recreation Survey -  The City of Westland wants to hear from all Westland residents about their recreational wants and needs.  PB & A Marketplace has already assisted the city in conducting an intelligence survey through phone polling.  The survey will also be available to complete online beginning July 14 and until the last day in August.  Paper copies of the survey will also be available at all city buildings.  This survey asks residents about their opinions on the convenience and usefulness of adding recreational facilities as well as specific programming and the costs associated.  The department will take the information obtained through the survey into consideration when planning upcoming recreation plans.   The survey takes less than 10 minutes and gives residents an opportunity to have their opinions heard and allows them to be a part of the process of bettering the City's amenities. The City is served by two public school districts; Wayne-Westland Community Schools serving 12,000 youth was recently named one of the Best School in Michigan by WXYZ-TV and is the proud recipient of 14 Golden Apple and two Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Awards.  Livonia Public Schools, educating nearly 15,000 students, is proud of their MEAP/MME scores that exceed state averages and the District has also earned Golden Apple and Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School Awards.


 

Westland's philosophy is that government should embrace good business principles.  Providing oversight over the City's operating budget of $60 million dollars, Westland is the only community in Wayne County with a 3-year balanced budget and an approximately 10 percent budget surplus.
