A Note From Your  Middle School Teachers
Middle School Connections
September 22nd, 2016
Dear Middle School Families,

What an amazing start to the 216-2017 school year! There is so much energy and enthusiasim radiating from our students and our teachers; that positivity is contagious. Each Middle School Connections newsletter will highlight a different aspect of middle school at Sea Crest. This week, our focus is on our exemplary math program. We share a bit about our inspirations and our philosophies below.

Even though we are not out of September, October is looming as a very important month form middle school. While technically, the very end of September, we have an important event for all 7th and 8th grade families, the High SChool Fair. Review the details below. We truly kick off October with Mid-Trimester Goals Conferences with Parents, Students, and Advisors. If you have not already signed up to meet with your child's advisor, please use the  link below to  sign   up  for our conferences.   You will meet with  your child and his/her Advisor  to check-in on the trimester so far and to set personalized learning goals.
Mid to late October is our time for Outdoor Education trips. The 6th graders travel or three days to Mt. Cross, the 7th graders go to Yosemite for four days, and the 8th graders spend five very full days in Washington D.C. There are important details for families, so check out the trips section.

All new middle school parents should have received an invtation for Power School Access; if you did not receive this iemail on Tuesday evening, please contact Mrs. Ellyn Kohrs at [email protected].

We hope you enjoy learning about all the fun things we are engaged with in Middle School.

Sincerely,

Your Middle School Team

Math
Incubating Our Next Generation of Mathematicians

At Sea Crest School. our math teachers, Matthew Twining and Corrinne Lieu are working towards incubating our next generation of mathematicians. We have been living and breathing the words of mathematician Paul Lockhart.

All middle school students have put themselves into the position of a mathematician, tinkering through hard problems, sharing their observations with their learning community and then using their collective intellect to find solutions to the problems. They have used algebra tiles extensively to make their abstract work tangible.

They’ve looked at Pascal's Triangle, understood how patterns that are immediately apparent come about as a result of other patterns that exist on a more micro-level. They also understand that patterns sometimes follow a trend that might  look different as the pattern grows.

They try hard to identify these patterns and share their findings with their peers to see what other insights may be uncovered, and in the process, develop a versatile mental ‘toolkit’ to grapple mathematical and logical puzzles in many different ways. 'Right' or 'wrong' is not so much of a focus. Rather than stressing computational accuracy, we guide students through the process of discovering the power and beauty of using logic to solve problems; mastery emerges naturally from this.
