CAMPUS SPOTLIGHT

Senior Washington DC Trip
Beginning Sunday, we explored the D.C. area and local Georgetown University with Mr. Lamb as our tour guide. We visited the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, Abraham Lincoln Memorial, and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. A few of the sites we visited were the 9/11 Memorial at the Pentagon, WWII Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, and Korean War Memorial. Two of the most eventful memories of our trip included listening to the opening arguments of a Supreme Court case on immigration and even protesting in front of the White House! We gathered with hundreds of students across the nation to participate in workshops and group-led discussions concerning popular political topics such as police body camera usage and the application of the pledge of allegiance. Throughout the week, we were able to tie in learning about government roles into the memorials, museums, and libraries we visited. At the end of the week, we experienced a lesson in history and applied it to modern day political issues.

Energy's Robotics Team
Energy HS joins top alliance to win VEX robotics tournament and advances to the State Championship.

Nuclear Brainstormers Field Trip
Students from the 10th grade Nuclear Brainstormers Cohort recently took the MetroRail to the Buffalo Bayou Walking trail. During this field trip, students explored the ways the bayou area connects different regions of our city as well as the Houston Cistern which historically supplied the city with water. The students represented Energy well in terms of being all around wonderful guests everywhere we went. Ms. Lockhart, Ms. Baird, Ms. Wilson and Mr. Heinen can't say enough how proud they are of their students.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ENERGY'S DEBATE TEAM
Kanthi Reddy took home a medal in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and made it into elimination rounds.

In Junior Varsity Policy Debate, Maximillian Roberts and Jacob Davis both took home 1st place medals, and Jacob Davis received the most speaker points in JV Policy.

Check out our campus contribution to our city's Energy Day Festival which took place in October.
Student Spotlight

This week, Mark Cabrera is Energy's outstanding student! In pre-calculus, Mark is thriving and is willing to pitch in with a helpful hand. He is always prepared for class. Within his Quantum Squad cohort, his core-content teachers are recognizing him - along with ten other students - for his outstanding conduct and his academic determination. Mark is a strong leader, very responsible, and - most importantly - uses his time well. Here at Energy, we value exemplary students. Thank you, Mark, for being a shining example for all Energy students.
Teacher Spotlight
This week Energy recognizes Ms. Kristick! Before her years as a teacher, she knew she wanted to do something service related. Her mother mentioned the need for teachers in under-served  communities which inspired her to teach. Now, Ms. Kristick teaches Algebra 1 and an accelerated Geometry and Algebra 2 class. As a teacher, Ms. Kristick likes getting to know her students by learning their personalities as well as having students set goals which align with who they are as humans. "I enjoy teaching at Energy because of how hard everybody works, the dedication from the staff, and the students. They are smart, fun to engage with, and it makes it fun to teach every day," explains Ms. Kristick. Her personal philosophy is to give as much love as possible, to as many people as possible in hopes that students leave the class with a little bit of love for math.
STUPENDOUS SCIENCE TEACHER: The faculty at Energy would like to high five Jillian Estrella for all of her hard work and dedication. This past October, Ms. Estrella was recognized in an article by the president of the McGraw-Hill Educational K-12 group. Thank you, Ms. Estrella, for being a phenomenal individual.
PROUD PARENT: I'm Mrs. Tracy Dennis, mother of two awesome Energy HS students, and I'd like to give a High Five to the new publication team for their outstanding work on the new weekly newsletter. I truly enjoy reading it and staying up-to-date with what's going on at Energy. Keep up the great work, talented team!!
COLLABORATIVE COHORT: We would like to recognize the teachers from the Nuclear Brainstormer's sophomore cohort. Ms. Lockheart, Ms. Wilson, Mr. Heinen, and Ms. Baird did a fantastic job planning and executing a cohort field trip last week. We value your contributions and your hard work; thank you for doing so much for our Energy team and for organizing a well put together field trip that students really enjoyed!
AWESOME ART TEACHER: This is a shout-out to Ms. Phillips, for always being a resource for teachers, a problem solver, and a "can do" person. Your contributions promote our community, thank you!
TERRIFIC TEACHERS:  This goes out to Dr. Gibson, Ms. Lockhart, Ms. Rachel Alexander, Ms. Amanda Alexander, and Ms. Finberg.  I thought it was so awesome to have non-humanities teachers at our turnitin training - thank you for investing your time in resources that support student writing growth!!

CAMPUS FEEDBACK FROM LAST WEEK

Interviewing for Success
By: Chance Bednorz

Hello, My Name Is...

One of the most important parts of an interview is your introduction to the interviewer. A solid handshake and a simple "Hello, my name is..." never fails to succeed. At the end of the interview, make sure to shake hands again, and re-state your name. You want to make sure that you are a memorable candidate and that they know who you are.

Appropriately Dressed
You might be interviewed for a various number of positions, from a job at a fast food company to an internship with a big company. Show up to your interview in your best attire. A full on suit is never overdressed, rather its classy and professional in the eyes of your interviewer. Nobody has ever been faulted for dressing up more than everyone else.

Smile and Nod
A smiling face and solid eye contact show that you are engaged and give off a positive vibe. Subtle cues in body language say more about you than words can express. So small things like making eye contact with the interviewer when speaking, or a simple smile in your introduction, could be just what you need to put you over the top and get you the position you want.

Take Your Time
If all the presentations we do at Energy have taught us anything, it's that we need to think before we speak and avoid any filler words. An interview is usually question-based, so there will be plenty of times you will need to give an answer to your interviewer. You will want to present yourself as best as you can, so there's no shame in taking one or two seconds to come up with a well-formulated response.

Breath Check

Good hygiene is super important in everyday life and becomes that much more important when going in for an interview. Make sure that you have showered, brushed your teeth, and put on deodorant for the day. Smell fresh, look fresh, feel fresh.

We appreciate all the parents who battled traffic to attend the evening meeting, especially after a long day of work!  Principal Lambropoulos filled us in on the upcoming new Energy Institute High School ground breaking ceremony and other important school issues.  Your input and questions on budget and funding were greatly appreciated.

Thanks to you the campaign See Success PTO membership drive was a huge success!  A record breaking amount of monetary support was received by over 60 EIHS families!  If you were unable to participate, don't worry, PTO memberships are still available.  Our goal is at least 100 families to join!
