Greetings from the Theatre Arts program here at Sea Crest School! Currently the drama curriculum is in full swing as I have been instructing on the mechanics of theatre through drama games, trust exercises, vocal technique, improvisation, audience awareness skills and script work (for 5th graders and above). Essentially, I am creating a theatrically fun yet educational environment for my students to engage in drama and understand the basics of play.
Next month, musical theatre will take centre stage in the theatre arts program! Every grade level will begin choreography, music and staging rehearsals for the upcoming all-school musical, Seussical! As each student enters the magical world of Dr. Seuss, they will learn how to participate and perform in a big musical production, acquiring movement, music, dramatization techniques, alongside theatre production etiquette.
Beyond the regular theatre arts daily program offerings, the Fifth Grade Student Council is helmed and supervised by yours truly. It is student-centric and aims to cultivate leadership skills, through weekly creative assembly duties and service projects throughout the year.
Our inaugural Glee Club has also just enjoyed its very first meeting last week, as eager participants jumped into the world of show choir with some robust singing and dancing.
In the middle school, the first trimester began with two elective offerings: drama and musical theatre. For the drama elective, students were given the opportunity to helm, create, script and perform in their own scenes, with a unified theme tying all the various scripts together. For the musical theatre elective, students have been working on honing their acting, singing, and dancing skills through specifically tailored and allocated musical theatre numbers from musicals such as RENT, Godspell, Smash, Heathers and Little Women.
I have planned an exciting year for your children and am thrilled to be their theatrical guide and mentor, exposing each of them to a world of creative imagination and fun! Sincerely,
Dr. Caleb Goh
Theatre Arts Teacher
