Spotlight: Health & Wellness

The Sea Crest Health and Wellness learning area focuses on a holistic concept of health. By doing so, we aid students in recognizing the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual dimensions of their own health. Our program examines the impact of interactions between the individual, the family, the wider community and the environment on the health of populations. Students plan, act and reflect in order to develop the essential knowledge and understandings, attitudes, values and skills which promote health practices, encourage participation in regular, physical activity and support the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. We teach health concepts through an integrated approach to ensure that students achieve a healthy, active lifestyle, including a sense of well-being.

We recognize that improving students’ knowledge about health issues and practices does not guarantee they will lead healthy lifestyles. However, students who are able to identify and develop their own attitudes and values associated with leading a healthy lifestyle are better equipped to make personally and socially responsible decisions. This healthy attitudes toolkit has the potential to enhance the quality of their life as well as the lives of others.

This year students have been assigned to fitness families where they focus on improving each other’s fitness. Each month, the students are tested on planks, push up, sit ups, wall sits, and the mile run. Mondays are known as Fitness Mondays where all activity is geared around improving fitness. On all other days of the week, students have the first fifteen minutes of class for fitness. Each family shares the responsibility to come up with their own workouts. Some of the groups have become very creative in how they are approaching this new part of Health and Wellness. It really is a joy to see all of the students coming together to help one another improve. Not only has this student-agency approach created a new sense of self worth and accountability for each other, it has also rejuvenated the students’ view of fitness.

Health and Wellness Lab is held every Friday and some Tuesdays where we concentrate our time on thematic curriculum for each grade level. This part of our wellness curriculum immerses our student in relevant topics in kinesiology, including nutrition, hygiene, and the brain-body connection. Additionally,   this time in lab supports their emotional growth and social competency.

Sincerely,

Katie Moore

*** Severe Food Allergies ***
During this time of the year when there are many classroom or school-wide events and celebrations it is important to remember the critical medical challenges food-borne allergies can pose to students. It is especially crucial to be mindful of the potentially life-threatening impact of peanuts and tree nuts. As you send food items to school for group consumption, please review our guidelines from our Family Handbook below.

Some students at Sea Crest have severe food allergies including dairy, gluten, soy, shellfish, tree nuts and peanuts. These allergies can be life threatening and many times can be triggered by contact alone and not only by ingestion of the food. By far the largest category of severe life threatening allergies comes from nuts.

We ask that the entire Sea Crest community become informed and sensitive to this issue. When preparing food for potlucks, bake sales, celebrations, or community gatherings, please avoid peanuts and tree nuts and clearly mark any dishes that may include them.
