$20 Million Investment in
 Lincoln Park High School
Dear Neighbor:

Me, LSC Member Cindy Schnoll, Mayor Emanuel, and #1school1community leaders Jennifer Fardy and Amy Zemnick celebrating the announcement
Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced that the Chicago Public Schools will be  investing $20 million dollars in Lincoln Park High School

Over the next two summers, the main building will be substantially renovated, with new computer facilities, a new "maker's lab" for drama and video production, new cafeteria, new weight room and music room, as well as rehabbing of the exterior and many other interior spaces, including the gym.  And, finally - air conditioning!

LPHS  will not only  have a modern look, but also the latest computer wiring and equipment for wi-fi and "distance learning," allowing students to communicate with teachers, students and experiences world-wide.

This renaissance caps the tremendous achievements of our LPHS students:
  • 80% of LPHS students take at least 1 Advanced Placement class
  • LPHS has the largest International Baccalaureate program in the United States
  • LPHS has the top performing arts program in the City of Chicago
Principal Mike Boraz captured the excitement saying, "The Cubs won after 108 years of waiting. We have waited 117 years, and now our World Series Championship is here too."  For the full text of his remarks, click here.

None of this would have been possible without the terrific work of the Friends of Lincoln Park High, the Local School Council, and our  #1school1community group.

Finkl Steel's Future

I am continuing to advocate for park space to be included in the redevelopment of the North Branch Industrial Corridor which includes the Finkl Steel site. You can read about our call for recreational space here and listen here.

Althought the  Department of Planning and Development recently posted its Summary of the September 29th Community Meeting regarding the site (click here), the community's desire for signficant open and recreational space is not fully reflected. Send your comments to dpd@cityofchicago.org and copy yourvoice@ward43.org. Keep an eye out for critical upcoming public meetings that will be posted on DPD's website.
