Penn Athletics celebrated the 100th anniversary of playing in the Rose Bowl during its win over Harvard Friday night. The Quakers played in the Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1, 1917, against Oregon. Penn was led by quarterback Bert Bell, who following graduation went on to become NFL Commissioner and helped found the Philadelphia Eagles. It took Penn nearly two weeks to make the trip to Pasadena for the game. There was no live coverage and the forward pass was merely a gimmick. At halftime, the game was tied at 0-0 but Oregon scored a pair of second half touchdowns to win, 14-0.

On Friday, Penn welcomed the Rose Bowl trophy, along with members of the Rose Bowl staff, to Franklin Field.  Upton Bell, the son of Bert Bell, participated in the pregame coin toss, while roses will be distributed to parents of Penn senior players during the Senior Night ceremony. The Rose Bowl logo was also painted on the field and the Penn helmets were adorned with a rose sticker.

Taking part in the presentation on the field were, L-R: Ivy League Deputy Executive Director Carolyn Campbell-McGovern, NFF COO Matthew Sign, Penn Athletics Director M. Grace Calhoun and Rose Bowl Immediate Past President Mike Matthiessen.
