Early Childhood Education

A New School Year and Transition

Welcome to a new school year! Let me begin by introducing myself. My name is Kristen Jansen. I am Fairmont's Director of Early Childhood Education. This is my 20th year as an educator and I wouldn't choose any other field. I have been a Fairmont family member since 1999 when I taught kindergarten at the North Tustin Campus.

Since then, I have taught pre-k, jk, kindergarten, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades and have been the campus administrator for our Historic Anaheim Preschool and the North Tustin Campus.

Throughout this school year, I will share articles that focus on our youngest Fairmont students. Some weeks, I will share articles that I have come across, and, other weeks, I will share through my own experiences. As always, I am open to your feedback and suggestions, so please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]

And now, for this week's insight: Transition, a ten letter word for tears, struggles, happiness, and new beginnings. As our children begin their school year, here are some tips to assist in those transitions:

  • Talk about the next school day the night before. Have your child set out their clothing for the next school day.
  • Set strong morning and night-time routines, including moving bedtime earlier during the school year. Arriving late to school is a quick way to throw off your child's day.
  • Have your child assist in packing their snack and lunch for the next day. When they sit down at the school tables to eat, they will already know what to expect.
  • When you pick up your child from school, ask them to share with you one new thing they learned, one thing they played with in the classroom, one child they played with, and one thing that made them happy. If this is your routine every day, your child will soon get to the car just exploding with positive occurrences from their day.
  • Start teaching your child to be independent early on. Have him or her carry their own backpack, hang up their lunch, and put their snack in the right location by themselves. It takes patience and a bit more time, but will be worth it in the long run.
  • When your child hits bumps in the road, be compassionate and understanding. Treat every challenge as a new learning experience about what to do next time. Emphasize to your child that they need to share their feelings with others clearly and openly.
  • Above all else, be positive about school. Reach out to your child's teacher frequently and offer your support throughout the year. Just wait to see how much they grow and learn. Truly savor this time, it does go by in a flash.
Husky Highlight

First Week Back for the Huskies!

Welcome back to school! The 2017-2018 school year has started w ith a positive note. The first day was exciting because everyone came on campus with a smile. Mr. Mendoza began the day during the Welcome Back assembly by welcoming students and introducing the Fairmont Code. The Fairmont Code is a set of expectations and behaviors for our parents, faculty, staff, and students with the goal of creating an intentional culture. Mr. Mendoza encouraged students to say "Hello" to fellow students, faculty, and staff as they passed people throughout their school days. As the school year goes on, more about the Fairmont Code will be revealed. The first day of school and the rest of the week the Fairmont Prep community has embraced the Fairmont Code. It has set a positive tone for the school year.
The rest of the week has been filled with classes, school pictures, assemblies, and class meetings. The week ended with a Back-to-School beach themed rally hosted by ASB. We are so excited to have the students back on campus and look forward to another incredible school year.
