What fun we had last Friday during our annual Pumpkin Fun Run. The weather was perfect for the event, and our students raised money by running (or walking) laps in the field. A great time was had by all! Thanks to all who participated and helped. A special "thank you" to Mrs. DeWolfe and Mr. Howard for a job well done!

Please note that Parent/Teacher conferences are this week and are mandatory. If you have not yet signed up, please do so through our website: http://stambroseschool.org/sign-parent-teacher-conferences/.

We are launching "Discover Catholic Schools Week" with an open house on Sunday, November 13 from 11:00am-1:00pm. Please spread the word to friends and family and invite them to stop in and visit our school. If you will be attending Mass at St. Ambrose Parish this week, please consider having your child wear their school uniform. This is a great way to show our parishioners what great students we have! Check out our new "animoto" celebrating our school on the website. This will also be shown on our foyer monitor during our open house: http://stambroseschool.org/check-new-school-video/.

The Fall Scholastic Book Fair is coming to the St. Ambrose School library, November 10 - November 15. It will also be open to parish families on Sunday, November 13, from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm. Be sure to come by during Parent/Teacher conferences, or on the Sunday. It's never too early to start your holiday shopping.

We are currently collecting items for our Three Kings Store. This is a great tradition at St. Ambrose School and a Christmas shopping opportunity for our students. We stock the store with re-gifted items donated by the community and the students go shopping for items that are sold for $1 or $2. All proceeds go directly to the school. If you have items to donate you can drop them off at the school office.

Yikes! Head Lice! What should I do?

Head lice are not dangerous. They breed rapidly and quickly form scalp infestations which cannot be ignored. Lice reproduce mostly in human hair follicles and feed on human blood. Eggs, or nits, are attached to hairs near the scalp, where the adolescent (nymphs) and adult lice live.

Important Questions to Ask Yourself about Lice
  1. Question: How did my child get lice?
    Answer
: Lice are transferred from head-to-head contact. This can occur while a child is near another child with lice or through the sharing of: hats, brushes/combs, scarves or ponytail holders. Avoid pillows, beds, couches or related objects if someone with lice has used them. Lice do not live long without human hosts. Any on the floor will be dead in a few hours or a day.

Third Annual Coat Drive is Underway!!

Thank you to those who have already donated to our winter wear collection for our less fortunate neighbors.  We have 3 marked boxes located in the entryway and front hallway of the school (thank you St. Leo Club!). We are checking with one of our distant parishes in the Shenandoah area which has a high percentage of neighbors who could really use our donations. Let's make it an early Christmas for these people while fulfilling a Spiritual Work of Mercy in this Year of Divine Mercy.  If you have nothing to donate from your own family this time around, we certainly welcome new bought items as well. Our drive ends November 30th
Three Kings Gift Shop Donations

Please consider wrapped_presents.jpgr helping us continue a great St. Ambrose School tradition-The Three Kings Gift Shop!  The Three Kings Shop tradition is a Christmas shopping opportunity for our students.  We stock the store with re-gifted items donated by our community that we sell for $1 or $2.  All proceeds go directly to the school.  The kids love it because they get to do their own shopping for their families with the help of our volunteer elves.

We are gladly accepting donations to stock our store! Please take a look through your closets, drawers, attics, and garages and see if you have items in VERY GOOD condition to donate to our shop. We could use gifts for moms, dads, children, teenagers, and grandparents.  Things like jewelry, toys, games, stuffed animals, ties, gadgets, mugs, books, religious items, knick-knacks, and any item you might want to receive or give as a gift.  No large gifts as the children must be able to carry the items home. We also need gift wrapping supplies, gift boxes, jewelry boxes, tape, and sturdy shopping bags. All donated items can be dropped off at the school office before December 13th.  We appreciate your support!  For questions please contact Maryellen DeWolfe at [email protected]

Club Updates
Updates from STEM Club

Last week the Club began our recycled race car project, which also introduced 2 of the 6 simple machines to the students: wheel and axle and incline planes.

For the wheel and axle, the club had an assortment of wheels to choose from, namely, bottle caps, squeezy pouch caps, washers, spools, PVC fittings and CDs, as well as a variety of axles including different diameter wooden dowels and straws. The club members were free to pick and choose, and to try different combinations. We learned that some of the materials, including the stainless steel washers looked like they would be great as wheels, but we had difficulty keeping them from wobbling, even after adding some pipe cleaner "supports" to either side.

Our K-1 members settled on bottle caps and larger diameter dowels, which work very well. The younger club members also had difficulty when they taped their axles directly to their race car body (they don't move!) Once we learned to place the dowels through straws and tape the straws to the race car body, we were off and running! The kids loved testing their race cars down the wooden inclined plane and driving them all around the parish center!

The older club members utilized the CDs and multiple jumbo straws to create their wheel and axles. They choose larger recycled bodies and ran the axles right through so that they would still be free to rotate. There was great creative thinking, innovation and problem solving going on! Next week the older club members will be adding an electronic circuit to their cars to investigate DC motors and switches, changing electrical power into mechanical power! Watch out in the hallways!
