FEATURED STUDENTS: S-Comm
Nineteen students from each of our comprehensive high schools have been selected to form the District's first Student Communications Team, or "S-Comm." Students were recruited and applied to participate on the team in September, then were interviewed in October. S-Comm members will participate in a variety of activities over the course of the year, and will complete projects relating to journalism, marketing, graphic design, photography, videography, web design, event planning, and more in this unique and exciting blend of extracurricular club, internship, and career-related learning experience.

District Participates in Smarter School Spending Process
A team of District administrators led by Chief Financial Officer Adam Stewart and Business Office Manager Michelle Morrison recently traveled to Chicago to participate in a Smarter School Spending conference sponsored by the Government Finance Officers Association. HSD is in the second cohort of districts from around the country who are learning best practices for strategic budgeting to achieve identified educational outcomes. Learn more about this process in the District's fall newsletter, "A Look Inside" coming to your mailbox in late November.

State Considers How Best to Implement Measure 98
On Nov. 8, Oregon voters approved Measure 98, which was designed to improve students' high school experience and reduce the state's dropout rate. The next step is for ODE staff to prepare rules for school districts to follow as they create their implementation plans; those rules must be passed by the State Board of Education by March 1, 2017. Throughout this process, stakeholder feedback will be sought and public comment will be welcome. Proposed rules will likely be on the State Board's meeting agendas for December, January and February.

Sister City Information Night
In 1988, Hillsboro formed a Sister City relationship with Fukuroi, Japan. In April 2015, 10 Japanese students taking part in the cultural student exchange program visited Hillsboro and stayed with host families to help cultivate cultural understanding and new friendships. Now it's time for a group of Hillsboro students to visit Fukuroi! If you are interested in learning more about the opportunity, which will take place in June 2017, please plan to attend the informational event on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m., at the Hillsboro Civic Center, 150 E. Main St.
