Seeking Therapy - The Barriers and the Solutions

"It's just a phase - I'll feel better soon." "I'm embarrassed to talk about my feelings." "I don't want to dredge up old, painful memories." "I don't want my friends and family to know I'm struggling with emotional problems."

These are just a few of the reasons why some people do not seek therapy. And yet, they live with emotional pain every day. No one should have to live with this type of pain when help is available.

Counseling at the Crisis Center's Trauma Counseling Center begins with a phone call and brief conversation with a client representative who helps to determine whether the Trauma Counseling Center is a good fit.  After that, an appointment may be made for a more in-depth assessment with a trained therapist.

The Corbett Trauma Center offers evidence-based therapeutic approaches including trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). Children receive specialized counseling that includes play and other therapeutic modalities that best help them participate in and understand their therapy.

The Trauma Counseling Center treats all kinds of trauma. There are no requirements or limitations that would prevent a person from receiving this therapy. Common experiences include abuse, violence, sexual assault, a death in the family or even a car accident. Any trauma that significantly impacts a person's life can be treated.

Trauma Counseling Center professionals have Master's degrees or higher levels of education and are experienced in helping people reduce their trauma symptoms. Staff may also connect people to additional therapeutic resources and referrals for traditional long term counseling.
