Happy Thanksgiving 2016

While we have been celebrating Thanksgiving for many generations, not everyone celebrates quite the same way.  Traditionally, most will include a turkey in their feast, other meats and sides will make appearances as well.

The cranberry is a pretty common side dish and in 2016 cranberries are readily available, whether you are a fan of the fresh or in some cases a fan of the canned, fall is harvest season for cranberries. Each autumn, (usually from mid-September until around mid-November in North America and March through May in Chile), cranberries reach their peak of color and flavor and are ready for harvesting.

Joining cranberries you may select yams, mashed potatoes, green beans, or not as common sides such as cabbage, jicama or mandarin oranges.  All offer a nice accompaniment to your turkey, roast beef or other protein.

Many of your ingredients purchased at your local markets, are made available through the trucking industry.  In fact, as you enjoy your Thanksgiving feast, please say an extra thank you to the truck drivers, many of who will be working on the holiday to ensure products get to the stores and to you.

Some Thanksgiving Fun Facts around the U.S.
  • In New England many folks use Vermont syrup to baste their turkey.
  • In Baltimore the chestnut is a local favorite.
  • Florida folks enjoy Key lime pie for dessert as opposed to a pumpkin, apple or pecan pie.
  • Hawaii invented the Turkey Trot, which is held every Thanksgiving as a 10 mile run.
  • Promptly at 9:00 a.m. EST, Macy's will present the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade.
  • In 2012, in response to the U.N. Foundation statement that Thanksgiving week was all about consumerism, Texas began the tradition of "Giving Tuesday", where Texans donate to their favorite charity the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. (https://www.givingtuesday.org/)
  • Since 1934 the Detroit Lions have hosted a football game on Thanksgiving Day.
We wish you all a happy, healthy and festive Thanksgiving.
