Michael's Memo

Can I ask you a question? When was the last time you felt overwhelmed? Was it today or yesterday? One of the things I constantly talk with people about is how busy they are. Just recently I said to myself, "I just want to stop and get off this train." I was thinking that I wanted to slow things down and enjoy them more. How do I do that? This is just one of the topics we will explore this month in worship at Slash. What does the Bible suggest I do when I get overwhelmed?

Be Here Now will be our worship theme during Advent , (the time of preparation for Christmas) . I think Be Here Now is a great way for us to talk about what it means to be fully present in our relationships and what it means for us to be fully present to God. Advent is the perfect time of the year to talk about presence because that is what Christmas is all about. The celebration of God being willing to enter into our world. Christmas, the time when God came to live among us and be present to us.

The problem is we live in a culture where it is hard to be fully present. There are so many distractions. We multi task so much that we become experts on being present and yet not really being here now. H ow can we be present to God and each other even when we are overwhelmed and distracted?   It's easy to show up. It's harder to be present. Technology doesn't help. It just enables us to be even more distracted and less present. All this can leave us feeling overwhelmed and empty. That is what I mean when I say, "stop and get off." I don't want to feel overwhelmed and empty, I just want to be present to God and each of you.

I hope you will be able to join us each week for our Advent worship as we present our Worship to God. Don't let your busy schedule prevent you from being present to God. Come and explore God's instructions on being present with us every Sunday in December and discover that you really can make a difference in this world, even when you are feeling overwhelmed.

En Agape',

Rev. Michael

Board Meeting

Splinters from the Board
By Cathy Tillman, Moderator

Slash Congregational Meeting
Plan to attend our 2016 congregational meeting to be held Sunday, December 11th immediately following the 11:00 AM ONE Worship service. To be voted upon will be our leadership for 2017 as well as the Slash 2017 Ministry Plan.  Please make every effort to attend this very important meeting.

Installation of 2017 Leadership Community
& All Church Planning Retreat
We have already scheduled an Installation and Ordination for our new officers and elders. It will be January 15th at the 11 am worship service. Later that day at 5 pm all church officers, elders, deacons, committee and ministry team leaders will gather to plan our 2017 ministries. They will share in a meal and then the General Board will meet at 7 pm.

Pavilion
A special dedication of our new pavilion will take place in the near future.  Stand by!  Think of all the wonderful ways that we can serve God through the use of this new facility and open ourselves to greater community opportunities.

Memorial Garden
Watch for changes to the Memorial Garden.  Those benches that you have been waiting for will soon be in place!  We promise!

Nominating Committee
I want to take this opportunity to thank our Nominating Committee for their outstanding work this year.  Every slot has been filled and with that said, I also want to thank those in our congregation who accepted leadership roles. It takes all of you to do God's work. A tremendous thank you to:  Leslie West, Elana Gant, and Ginnie Caudell.

Help Fund Our Pavilion While Creating a Lasting Memory
When we first discussed the pavilion, it was decided that we would sponsor a fundraising project to help in covering the cost of the new pavilion.  Now through December, you will have the opportunity to purchase a memory plate engraved with special wording.  Those plates will be available at $150.00 each and may be purchased in memory of someone, in honor of someone, or sponsoring someone.  Forms are available in the sanctuary.  Checks should be made payable to Slash Christian Church and placed with your order form.  We hope that you will take the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful project by purchasing a memory plate for someone. This will be a wonderful way to remember someone and have a lasting memento.

2016 Stewardship
2016 Stewardship Campaign

The last several weeks at church have been simply amazing.  What a blessing to hear again about what really matters to God and accept the invitation to "Go and Do the Same". Many of you responded with Covenant cards and support for our ministry here at Slash. We hope you enjoyed the special focus and that you are as convinced as we are that God is at work in our congregation.

Our team has presented a Ministry Plan to the board which was approved and is now available for you to review. Copies will be available in worship starting on November 27.  The Stewardship Team is excited about the work we will do together with these offerings. We will present the Ministry Plan for congregational approval at the December 11 Congregational meeting which follows the 11 am ONE Worship. If you have any questions about the plan please contact Ed Hellermann or any member of the Stewardship & Finance committee. We can still accept your covenants if you have not yet made one. Please place those in the offering this Sunday.

January 8th, 5 pm - 7 pm Elder/Diaconate Training and Meal

Come and join all the Elders and Diaconate of Slash in a time of fellowship and learning. This is an important opportunity to get to know one another and learn about our ministry plans for the year. Several important topics will be discussed.
  • The Serving schedule will be distributed
  • The shepherding of the congregation will be outlined
  • Sunday morning ministry responsibilities - early service & 11:00 service, ONE Worship services, and special worship services
  • Greeter/lead diaconate responsibilities
  • Visitor greeting process
  • Receiving offering
  • Serving communion
  • Communion preparation
Slash Post Office Opens Soon

You may use the free Slash Postal Service to pass along Christmas greetings to fellow members and regular visitors to our church.
A mailbox will be placed in the back of the sanctuary where you can leave your Christmas Cards.  Please bring your cards on December 4th and 11th. The cards will be sorted by the Chi Ro class and they will be available for pick up during worship services this month.

We encourage you to make a gift to the Christmas Offering to benefit the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Virginia with the money you save on postage this Christmas.

The youth and I took a Saturday night and watched Facing the Giants, and since then we have focused on getting right with God. If you get right with God then everything else falls into place. Those who choose to allow him to work in their lives by giving him all the honor and the glory will be praised. We serve a big God who opens doors no one else can open and closes doors no one else can shut. We have been investigating that within our own lives. As we look forward into the Christmas season with youth winding down for the year and into next year, the youth will be meeting every other Wednesday in 2017 at the church.

November 30:  Regularly scheduled youth group at church from 5:15-6:30
December 7: NO YOUTH GROUP
December 11: End of the year Christmas Party at the West House. This will be the last youth group of the year.
January 4: Regularly scheduled youth group at church from 5:15-6:30
January 18: Regularly scheduled youth group at church from 5:15-6:30

Group Week of Hope
We are looking to have our first youth mission trip fundraiser in January. Stay tuned for details.
Please be in prayer for our youth as they make the decision to help better the community of Indianapolis, IN. We will depart July 1st and will likely be back July 8th.

Christmas Family
Slash Christian Church will be sponsoring a family (or families) in need for Christmas this year as we have in many years past. Information concerning the families will be coming in the near future.  The Outreach Committee hopes that you will continue to make Christmas a little brighter for others in need - bringing smiles and sharing your gifts with someone in need.

Christmas Offering - December 18 and 25
2015 Christmas Offering
The message is to BELIEVE AGAIN - A DEEPER HOPE!
The Word from the church is to Believe in a Deeper Hope that moves beyond the "wrappings" of Christmas around us. We proclaim a Hope that brings Good News, Joy and Compassion for all of God's people.   Spreading the word of Jesus Christ, telling others of his blessings, sharing the news that miracles happen - these are things that we think about during the Christmas season.  The gifts received through the Christmas Special Offering on December 11 and 18 will fund ministries offered by the Region that serves our Church.  Each Region is charged with the responsibility for working to fulfill the mission of the church and providing for the continuing renewal of the life of congregations, members, and ministers.  We hope that you will help to continue to spread God's Word throughout the world by supporting the Christmas Offering.
