ARTS AND ATHLETICS CENTER
At Wolcott, we mean it when we say we are 'Built Around The Strengths Of Our Students'. What better way to demonstrate our commitment to nurturing students' strengths than with our plans for a new Arts and Athletics Center!
The new Center, conveniently located two short blocks from our main campus building, will include:
- Spacious gym with regulation-size basketball court and bleacher seating for 150
- Expansive stage for performances with audience seating for 350
- Increased studio space for art, music, and Makers Lab
- Urban garden

COLLEGE CORNER
College acceptance letters have started to arrive. Congratulations to our seniors!
This fall, our College Planning Curriculum included programs of interest for freshmen through seniors. Below are some of our events, all facilitated by local experts:
- Before, During, and After Applications
- Understanding College Athletics and Recruitment and Navigating the NCAA
- Understanding and Navigating Support Services in College
- The Price Tag for College and Accessing Financial Aid and Scholarships
As the admissions season progresses, we continue to host college admissions representatives from colleges across the country, most recently including
University of Missouri, American University, Landmark College, Georgia State University, Colgate University, Muskingum University, Indiana University, Curry College, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Lynn University.
Look for the 13th Edition of The K&W Guide to Colleges for Students with Learning Differences, co-authored by our own Marybeth Kravets, Director of College Counseling. This most recent edition includes comments from Dr. Pike as well as from a Wolcott family and student.

NEWS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
At Wolcott, we are deeply committed to the philosophy of strength-based learning. When we measure the benefits of this model, we often ask questions that require us to look inward -- Are our students actively learning, meeting achievement goals, both perceiving themselves to be successful and quantitatively experiencing success in school?
Lately, I have noticed another metric of success -- the impressive level of engagement and proactivity of our students. Here are a few of their recent achievements:

Solar Energy: One student, driven by his interest in environmental science, successfully secured grants to purchase and install solar panels on our roof. The engineering and science classes will use data from the solar panels for research projects they have designed.

Computer Coding: Our Robotics Club joined with our computer science students to invent a coding tool for elementary school students. The tool is being used to introduce 3rd graders at the Lab School to coding. To further enhance its applicability, our students adapted the tool into a braille version as well as a Spanish one. Kudos to our students for being selected for commendation by President Obama's Science Advisor and Chief Technology Officer for their invention.

Engineering: A group of students visited SRAM Corporation to present their 3-D prototypes of cycling related products.

GREEN initiatives: Students continue to garner foundation support to maintain the school garden and develop plans for future greenhouse.

Talcott Reading Buddies and Mentorship Program: We are in our 4th year of partnership with Talcott Elementary. Our students visit SK and 1st grade classrooms multiple times a week as reading buddies and mentors.
Equally impressive, our strength-based model has allowed our faculty to continue to enrich their talents and share their expertise. Our faculty recently showcased their achievements in a variety of forums:

After receiving the 'It Takes a Village Award' at the annual Everyone Reading Illinois conference, two faculty members presented on
Developing Complex Writing Skills for Students with Dyslexia.

As part of the Tyree Center's First Friday series, faculty organized presentations on second language acquisition and presentations on mindful communication.
-
Our college counselor Marybeth Kravets participated in the NYT Symposium on College Admissions and Preparation.

Our Computer Science faculty has been working with our students and the University of Chicago faculty to complete their work on our NSF Research grant.
We have much to look forward to at Wolcott. I am excited to see the strengths of our students and faculty continue to grow and impact our community so positively.

FROM THE ADMISSIONS
OFFICE
As we watch our new freshmen transition to Wolcott, it is hard to believe that we are already recruiting prospective students for the 2017/18 academic year. One of my favorite fall activities is attending high school fairs. Whether I am in Hinsdale, Hyde Park, or downtown Chicago, I enjoy introducing Wolcott to new families as well as hearing the fabulous word on the street about the school. This year, I am scheduled to visit 20 schools, including public, charter, religious, and private, independent schools. In my view, the more schools we connect with, the more diverse our student body. Diversity is an asset that we work hard to nurture.
Having presented at countless school fairs, I have discovered that our students are our best ambassadors. Their observations are mature and insightful. As one student ambassadors recently explained, "At Wolcott, my teachers all just get me. I felt comfortable right away. I think that's because the kids and the teachers are really supportive and welcoming."
