Reminders for the Week:  Welcome Back to School Picnic this Sunday;
 Classes start Tuesday
Message from the  Administration
This Monday, August 21st, we have the opportunity to witness a once in a lifetime event, a total solar eclipse. An instinctive response is to give voice to the awe and amazement to be alive to witness this moment. Surely the Jewish tradition - with a blessing of gratitude for everything from eating an apple to seeing a friend after a long time, a tradition that encourages us to say 100 blessings a day - would have a blessing for such an event?! However, in the case of an eclipse, it is not so. For a good portion of Jewish history from the prophet Amos to the rabbis of the Talmud, an eclipse has been understood to be a bad omen and a sign of God's displeasure with human action.

And while at Yavneh we don't teach that God acts in this way in the world, it is comforting to turn to this interpretive tradition at this moment. This past Saturday we witnessed an event many of us can't imagine actually occurred in our lifetime. Neo-Nazis carrying torches shouting "Jews will not replace us", KKK members carrying assault rifles and waving confederate flags, an American mowed down by a white supremacist in a truck. The images are horrific.

Images of Nazis are not foreign to us at a Jewish school. But up until this moment for the students, the images have lived in history books, not in current events and not in the streets of the United States. At Yavneh we teach. It's what we love, it's what we're passionate about. As the news continues to unfold, our job as educators is to listen to our students, understand their needs and concerns and create appropriate conditions for them to process, learn and grow.

As parents, we encourage you to be aware of the images and messages your children may be exposed to and make time to listen to your children. For specific suggestions as to how to approach these and other issues of concern with your children, we encourage you to visit the following resources:

For the last 10 years, the 8th graders on their trip to Washington D.C. have begun their tour of the US Capitol by watching a movie in which the opening words are E Pluribus Unum - Out of many one. These words are of course more than the opening of an educational movie at the Capitol. They are the motto of the United States of America. These words are found on the Seal of our Country and the Seal of the President of the United States. These remarkable words echo Yavneh's fundamental belief in the strength that is created by our diversity. May the images and headlines of these past weeks be eclipsed by our belief in the strength of our children and may we recognize the many blessings of the Yavneh community as we embark on this coming academic year. We look forward to seeing you at Sunday's picnic and greeting your children as they return to school on Tuesday.
