Mentoring Program Kicks off 2016-17 with 1,200 Pairs

On Tuesday, August 2nd, the Mentoring Program marked the start of its sixth program year with the annual Mentoring Program Kick-off. This year's event was a huge success and our biggest to date! We had 559 people in attendance, including mentors, mentees, community guests, and parents. Close to 200 pairs were able to meet for the first time.

During the first part of the night, mentors and mentees had the chance to talk and get to know one another, while parents attended a presentation in an adjacent room about dealing with the transition to college. Parents then joined the mentors and mentees in the main ballroom where Amira Nasrallah (mentee) and Donna Gutschmidt (mentor) spoke to the group. The pair shared their experiences from their three years in the Mentoring Program and offered advice to the new mentors and mentees. Parents were then given the chance to meet their students' mentors before the close of the event.

This year's Mentoring Program Kick-off marks the start of an exciting year for the Mentoring Program. After five years of slowly scaling the program, it is now at full capacity with 1,200 mentoring pairs! We are excited to be working with such a large number of students and to have such a substantial group of volunteers from the Greater Cleveland area. As the reach of our program increases, we are eager to make more connections and see what opportunities we can provide for our students going forward.

College Now Receives New 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant; Expands impACT the 216 Program

College Now was awarded a new 21 st Century Community Learning Center grant. The award, $200,000 per year for three years (total of $600,000) is passed through the U.S. Department of Education to the Ohio Department of Education, then on to College Now and will allow the organization to expand the impACT the 216 after school programming to the Euclid community through a partnership with the Euclid Public Library.

impACT the 216 is an eight-week program that runs three times each school year designed to increase students' reading and math proficiency and boost their ACT scores. In addition, students who participate in the program are required to develop a college plan that they will present to their families at the end of their eight-week session. Not only do College Now advisors guide students through the process, they educate their families on the college-going process. This increased awareness among families will support students' postsecondary aspirations. Additionally, participants take part in college visits and are eligible for a stipend upon successful completion of the program.

Registration is open NOW for the fall session of impACT the 216! Register now!

College Now Partners with Local Employers to Meet STEM Talent Demand

STEM jobs are expected to grow by 1 million to more than 9 million between 2012 and 2022. As a result, STEM employment is projected to grow about 13 percent during the same time period, a rate 2 percent higher than the rate of growth projected for all occupations (U.S. Department of Labor. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Occupational Outlook Quarterly, Spring 2014).

Closer to home, by 2025, Northeast Ohio will have added 85,000 jobs in healthcare and 45,000 jobs in manufacturing, the region's two leading industries (Team NEO. Occupations by the Numbers. November 2015). Both sectors require STEM skills and knowledge.

We are working closely with two major College Now STEM Initiative partners, Alcoa and ArcelorMittal, to close the gap between STEM jobs and STEM skills.

Launched in the 2013-14 academic year, the College Now STEM Initiative is offered in more than 60 high schools in Cuyahoga County, over half in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The STEM Initiative helps more than 13,000 high school students learn about, explore and aspire to STEM careers, especially those available in our community.

Through these efforts and our scholarship program, 48 percent (493/1,036) of all College Now's traditional age scholarship recipients are majoring in a STEM field at 135 institutions across the country. Of the most recent freshmen class, 54 percent (200/374) pursued STEM majors.

College Now is grateful for Alcoa and ArcelorMittal's support; it is not only helping meet our nation's and our local community's critical need for a STEM-educated workforce, but is also helping individual youth aspire to and achieve promising futures.
