As our keiki return back to school this fall, drivers near schools may see an increase in cars on the road and pedestrians crossing the streets.

The City is committed to improving transportation and ensuring our communities are safer for our families and keiki, which is why we are encouraging our community members to be mindful of traffic and pedestrian safety this month & throughout the year.

Pedestrian Safety Month
On Tuesday, Mayor Kirk Caldwell and the Honolulu Department of Transportation Services led a pedestrian safety sign waving event with city officials, community members, the Honolulu Police Department, and transportation officials to remind drivers to be alert for people crossing the street.

Each August, Pedestrian Safety Month brings communities together to heighten awareness of making Hawaii a safer place to walk and commute. Additionally, the State's Department of Transportation's Walk Wise Hawaii program will be hosting a series of pedestrian safety events in Oahu throughout this month. Residents and keiki are all invited to participate!

Improving Pedestrian Safety near our Schools
Ewa Residents recently contacted my office with safety concerns near Ewa Beach Elementary and Campbell High School.  Students and parents  are having to negotiate traffic & road construction obstacles while crossing at intersections near the schools. Residents have also raised concerns regarding the unsafe pedestrian conditions.

In response, I have submitted a Request for Investigation & Services Report to the City, requesting the enforcement of police officers  at the following intersections while students are walking to school in the morning and walking home in the afternoon:
  • Ft. Weaver Rd and Papipi Rd. intersection
  • Ft. Weaver Rd and Makule Rd. intersection
I am currently awaiting a response from the Honolulu Police Department and look forward to providing our residents with any future updates.

If there are any other areas you would like my office to address in regards to pedestrian safety, please contact me at [email protected].

Additionally, I would like to continue to hear your thoughts regarding transportation in our district. Our community's feedback contributes to improving our roads and making our Leeward Coast a safer place to live in. Please feel free to email me or call me at (808) 768-5001.

Blue Zones Project Kapolei/Ewa Update - Group Discussions
Are you interested in helping to improve the well-being in schools, businesses, and organizations in the Kapolei/Ewa area? Examples how Blue Zones Project is partnering with residents to make our community a safer place is by examining safe routes to schools for our keiki; looking at the potential to expand bike and pedestrian pathways; promoting wellness in the workplace; and encouraging individual wellness through purpose workshops.

Blue Zones Project Kapolei-Ewa is inviting residents to participate in small group discussions to share your thoughts and insights on how best to make Blue Zones Project a success in schools, businesses, and organizations throughout Kapolei/Ewa. Organizers are seeking your feedback on the current state of well-being in your community and how we can work together to improve environments and make healthy choices easier where you live, work, and play.
