Dear Students, Parents, Teachers & Friends of Education,

Gearing up for Competition Season

Sims Academy Hot Rodders engine build team conducted demonstrations of their engine building abilities during the Summit Racing for the Georgia Street Rod Association event this summer. Members are Michael Jira, Connor Brown, Christian Price, Zac Mullins, Austin Kennedy, and Emma Robertson. The team's corporate sponsor, Jim Ellis Chevrolet, donated a 350 Chevy competition engine valued at over $7,000 to the team for practice.

On August 12th three teams conducted demonstrations at the GA Street Rod Association's annual picnic. Beginning this fall, the teams will conduct engine build demonstrations to raise travel expense money for the competition season, which begins in April. The automotive program at Sims Academy and its instructor Ms. Michelle Beck appreciate the support of team sponsors Jim Ellis CHEVY, Jim Ellis Buick/GMC, O'Reilly Auto Parts, GA Street Rod Association, Summit Racing, and Mr. Tom Rieger, Lanier Technical College welding instructor, for their support of the Sims Academy automotive students and the Hot Rodders program.
"Ted Talks" with Teddy Roosevelt

Kindergarten teacher Rebecca Martin at Bethlehem Elementary, doesn't stop teaching in May. As a member of the National Park Service VIP (Volunteer in Parks) team, Rebecca served all summer i n the education and resource management departments at Devils Tower National Monument in northeast Wyoming. This was her fourth trip to work at Devils Tower in the last year and third as a volunteer which includes fall and spring break.

As a member of the resource management department, Rebecca helped to identify and classify non-native plants and also participated in water quality testing using dragonfly larvae. As a member of the education department, she worked in the visitor center, led ranger hikes, and helped children earn their Junior Ranger badges. One day, she even had the opportunity to work with "Theodore Roosevelt" as he was guest speaker, educating visitors a bout the National Park Service.

Devils Tower was our country's very first National Monument. It was created as part of the Antiquities Act signed by Theodore Roosevelt on September 24, 1906..

Rebecca is currently writing and designing an activity packet for older junior rangers ages 13-17.

There Is Gold at Russell Middle

Russell Middle School's Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter went to the National Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN. RMS had two students compete in STAR Events. Both students won gold medals!

Lexi McGuire - Focus on Children - Gold Medal
Carson Skinner - Career Investigation - Gold Medal

Leadership Experience is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers and communities.
