Vol. 7, Iss. 22
August 17, 2017
Dear Parents,

Welcome back! We are so excited to welcome students and family back to Ben Franklin Academy for what promises to be a great school year!

Each year, the staff comes up with a motto for the year. Last year, we kicked off a focus of instilling a growth mindset with our motto, "The Power of Yet." We encouraged students who thought they didn't know how to do something to add the word 'yet.' It's not, "I can't do multiplication," but "I can't do multiplication yet." The students learned there is always potential for future learning and growth. This year we are expanding on last year's motto. Our motto this year is "Be Brave...Do Hard Things." We want students to reach out of their comfort zones and try something challenging. We hear students say, "that's too hard" or "it's hard for me" and we want to encourage them to continue working towards those goals and objectives that might be more difficult. We want students to choose to be challenged instead of taking the easy way out. All of us are here to support and help them, and you, while they are doing hard things!

Next Monday will be an exciting day. We will be observing the Solar Eclipse as a school. I have ordered eclipse glasses ( verified to be compliant with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standards) and we will observe the peak of the eclipse from our new turf field. Teachers will be sending home permission slips for students to go outside and view the eclipse. If there are students who do not have permission to go outside and view it, we will offer a space in the building where students can watch a live streaming of the eclipse. Please return those permission slips as soon as possible.

The past week has been so fun meeting and visiting with so many of you at meet and greets and the back to school picnic. I am excited to meet and get to know each and every one of you. Please do not hesitate to call or email me with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Here's to a great 2017-18 school year!

Sincerely,

Diana Simpson

Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, and literacy. We will be a data driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering the arts, sports, nature, and character.
Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Purity and Humility.
