We are tapping into that "back-to-school" surge of energy with our next DC MOVES Forum. Georgian College Orangeville has generously offered to host.

Big Brothers Big Sisters' In School Mentoring

In the In School Mentoring program a volunteer meets with a child once a week right at the child's school. One on one visits provides children with a friend to talk to and share the experiences of growing up with. When they meet they play activities such as board games, crafts or just hang out in the playground.

The In School Mentoring program requires a weekly visit of 1 hour for the duration of the school year. Matches do not meet over the summer break or during other school holidays. Studies show that mentoring helps kids stay in school, avoid risky behavior such as bullying, and grow up having more respect for family, peers and community.

Poverty Reduction

Commentary: A Renewed Voice for Social Canada

The Caledon Institute's latest commentary paper proposes that the Government of Canada, as part of its poverty reduction strategy, put in place a new Canadian Council on Inclusion and Wellbeing, outlining the historical roots for such a Council and detailing a proposed structure and financing.

Volunteer Appreciation Night - Guest speaker

The Shelburne Foodbank (aka The Shepherd's Cupboard) is hosting an event for volunteers and friends on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at 6:30 pm at the Shelburne Pulbic Library. Elaine Weir, Bridges Out of Poverty facilitator, is booked as the guest speaker. She will be speaking about the social and economic impact that poverty has on individuals and on our community.

We're excited!

We've been busy at work on the new Volunteer Dufferin website that will launch this Fall. There will be a special launch event (it's a secret for now J ), but we'll keep you posted.
