Charlottesville
Dear Friends

I am currently on vacation, but I want to address two events taking place soon in New Orleans in the wake of what happened in Charlottesville last weekend.

The first of these events is a demonstration this Shabbat.  At 1pm the New Orleans community as a whole will be marching from Jackson Square to Congo Square to express its solidarity with Charlottesville and its opposition to white supremacy, anti-Semitism and bigotry.  The second is called 'Breaking The Silence,' with clergy speakers from multiple faiths and a prayer vigil, at 6.30pm this Monday, August 21st at Beth Israel, 4004 West Esplanade Ave.

Were I in town, the Shabbat event would place me in a dilemma.  I would want to attend but not be able to.  I know it presents a dilemma for our community too.  I must rely on your individual consciences and the nature of your own Shabbat practice - the range in our community is wide - to decide how you will act.  I trust you to do so in a fashion that will express your Jewish principles, and will in whatever way recognize the fact that last week, the Jewish community of Charlottesville's Shabbat was marked by the need to move its Torah scrolls to a safe location and to exit its building through the back doors because white supremacists with semi-automatic weapons in their hands were standing across from the building.

And I hope very much that you will attend and support the 'Breaking The Silence' event on Monday evening, where no Shabbat considerations arise.  In these turbulent and intimidating times, it is all the more important that we affirm our connections to each other.

As we prepare for the Holidays

In preparation for the High Holidays, we are looking to assemble a crew to clean and polish all the many adornments on all our Torahs.  It will take place on Sunday, August 27th at 10:30 am.

All it takes is a few hours of your time. Some people find it both a relaxing experience as well as a quiet time to shmooze with the rest of the volunteers.

Please RSVP to Jonathan Cohen at  [email protected] or call the synagogue office at 504-889-1144

Sisterhood Class
SISTERHOOD CLASS BEGINS SEPTEMBER 6!

Our Wednesday Sisterhood class will begin again on Wednesday, September 6 at 10am.  There are only 2 classes before the High Holydays begin.  We will spend them finishing Rabbi Joseph Telushkin's book, Words that Hurt, Words that Heal.

I hope you have been able to read the whole book over the break.  In the first class we will hold a discussion based on the questions below; in the second, I will bring us a piece by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks to explore in the context of the book as a whole.  Please come to the first class prepared with answers to the following questions:

What was the most important piece of new information you learned from the book?

Was there any aspect of the book's content you found problematic or challenging?

Name up to three ways you will take the lessons of this book into your life.

I look forward very much to seeing you on September 6 th!

Warmly
