There's Room for You in Summer Choir!

Summer Choir Singers are any singers who wish to sing in the choir on any chosen Summer Sunday morning. They are welcome to come to the Chancel promptly at 10:00 a.m. and rehearse that morning’s anthem. Summer singers wear no robes, sing the Anthem, then join family and/or friends in the congregation for the remainder of the service.  All singers are welcome!

This Sunday, the choir sings the exciting rhythmic "The Word Was God" by Rosephanye Powell, which you may remember from last year's Lessons & Carols service. Text is from John 1:1-3.

It's C.R.U.D. Week at UPC

Welcome, New Members

UPC Session met following worship Sunday, August 6, and received three new members.

Kirby Thomas joins by transfer of membership from Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kansas. Kirby recently relocated to Austin from Kansas City. She is an education architect, designing schools. Kirby has family all over the country, and they do their best to stay in touch. She is eager to get involved with UPC Young Adults and service ministries.

Kay and Steve Thomas join by transfer of membership from Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin. They came to Austin in 1996, arriving from Wichita, where Steve retired from USAF service. They both began careers at UT Austin; Steve recently retired from UT, and Kay works in the Student Success Initiatives department. Kay and Steve have been visiting UPC for a few months, and report, "UPC has been the most open and welcoming congregation we've ever enjoyed. We are impressed by the focus on mission and obvious care for the well-being of all mankind. We look forward to being contributing members of this generous congregation."
Do You Know Your History?
William Lambdin Prather, active UPC member and President of The University of Texas 1899-1905, was known to routinely dismiss his classes by saying to the students,  “Go into the world but remember, the eyes of Texas are upon you.” And so, in 1903, the words  “The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You” were written by Lewis Johnson and John Lang Sinclair and set to the tune of “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” and adopted as the University of Texas’ theme song, in his honor.

The Heritage Ministry Team is looking for a volunteer with interest and skills in scrapbooking to reconstruct two scrapbooks--one from the 1920s and another from the 1940s--that are falling apart.

Contact Sharyn Reynolds 512-695-3387 or  [email protected] for more information.

T he things we say and do today contribute to the making of history. What sort of history do you want to be part of creating?
Children's Summer Fellowship Hour
We invite children of all ages to meet in Room 206 on the Upper Level from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. for a time of playing games, service projects, and a Bible story of the week. Breakfast snacks will be provided.

Adult Summer Sunday Fellowship Hour
All adults are invited to gather in Fellowship Hall for coffee, treats, and conversation each Sunday this summer from 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. The Present Word class continues to meet at 9:30 a.m. Room 3, lower level.  See you Sunday!
New Underwear Collection
for Street Youth Ministry
For the next few Sundays, the Service Committee will be collecting packs of new underwear (men's and women's in any sizes) to donate to the young men and women of the Street Youth Ministry. These young people are outside in the heat all day and do not have access to places to do laundry, so having a supply of clean undergarments is essential in these hot summer months. If you are able to bring in some new underwear in a plastic bag to donate, it will be collected during the offering in the shopping cart that gets pushed down the center aisle. Thank you!

There will be one more “Coffee with Matt” this summer, Thursday, August 24, at 10:00 a.m. in the UPC Fellowship Hall. Room is still available, so come and join in on the “conversations” with Matt!

UPC Circle News
The Ruth-Dorcus and Martha Circles will hold a  joint meeting the second Saturday in August, August 12, at 11:30 at Chez Zee, 5406 Balcones Dr, Austin, TX 7873.  All women of the church are welcome to attend!

The Mission of Faith & Grief Ministries is to provide ongoing comfort to persons who have experienced the death of a loved one. As we prayerfully discern our mission, we value most the gifts of the Holy Spirit’s gentle and restless source of comfort; community that understands grief and mourning; compassion revealed in silence, listening, tears, and surprising laughter; stories that speak truth in love and promote wholeness; and collaboration that joins strength to strength.

The Austin area Faith & Grief Gathering occurs August 10, at noon, Westminster Presbyterian Church. For more information, go to faithandgrief.org.

UPLift Needs Next Week
Every Tuesday morning, UPC volunteers provide some food and coffee, hygiene items, and occasional financial assistance for our clients. While all donations are welcome at any time, here are some items to consider bringing to worship this week.

Thank you for your incredible support of this UPC mission!!

Hygiene Supply Summer Drive

The UPC Youth Ministry collects travel sized hygiene supplies year round, but the summers are a great time to help us stock back up. When you're traveling this summer either for vacation or for work, please remember to collect the travel sized hygiene supplies—from hotels, airplanes, wherever—and drop them off in the basket outside John Leedy’s office. These supplies go a long way to help those in need. Our VBS kids made up more than 60 hygiene kits last week—thank you, Heroes!—so our supply levels are a bit down. Please be sure that bottles are unopened / unused and that toothbrushes are individually wrapped. Thanks for your help!
