Allies in Disguise raises $5K for AIM

The Allies in Disguise 5K Run and Mile Walk raised approximately $5,000 for AIM.
 
The disability-awareness event, held Saturday, Oct. 29 in Painted Post's Craig Park, was the fall fundraiser for AIM's programs and services.
 
The 5K followed the bike path through Painted Post and Riverside, and the mile walk went through nearby neighborhoods. About 100 runners and walkers took part Allies in Disguise, many decked out in Halloween costumes.
 
The overall men's 5K winner was Tom Cleveland, with a time of 20 minutes, 55 seconds. Amanda Baker was the overall women's winner with a time of 21 minutes, 16 seconds.
 
"It was heartening to see so many people having a good time for a good cause. We appreciate that people take time out of their busy schedules to support AIM and its mission," said John Zick's AIM's director of government and public affairs. "We're proud to be part of such a supportive community."

AIM navigators can help with open enrollment

Open enrollment at NY State of Health, the state's Affordable Care Act marketplace, is underway, and AIM's free Navigator Program can help.

Open enrollment began Nov. 1 for new enrollees with NY State of Health. For those who already have coverage through the marketplace and want to renew or change health plans, open enrollment begins Nov. 15.

Open enrollment ends Jan. 31.

AIM has a team of six navigators to help people compare health plans on the NY State of Health website, enroll in coverage, and receive help paying for their coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

Eligibility for subsidies is based on income and household size. Consumers may qualify for Medicaid or the low-cost Essential Plan, or get tax credits that lower monthly premiums for health plans from a variety of insurers.

The AIM Navigator Program covers Steuben, Chemung, Schuyler and Allegany counties. Evening and weekend appointments are available.

AIM students featured in artist's exhibit 
About a dozen students from AIM's Transitions Program were involved in a project by local artist Vani Akula, which led to the exhibit "Between Fear and Freedom: Explorative Portraiture by Satyavani Akula," on display through Nov. 26 at Community Arts of Elmira.

The AIM students collaborated with Akula for several months and are featured in her portraits. The gallery, located at 413 Lake St., is open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. For more details, go to communityartsofelmira.com or call (607) 846-2418.

Youth social skills classes begin Nov. 14
ELMIRA | AIM will offer a four-session Youth Social Skill Development Program beginning Nov. 14 in Elmira.

The program teaches social and communication skills to youths with developmental disabilities. The curriculum can be found here. The program is open to youths ages 14-21 who live at home and have Office for People with Developmental Disabilities eligibility.

Classes will be held from 4:15-6:15 p.m. Nov. 14, 16, 21 and 22 at AIM's Elmira office, 350 W. Church St.
