2016 HUGHES INVESTMENTS ELEVATE UPSTATE GRANT FINALISTS
|
The 2016 Hughes Investments ELEVATE UPSTATE Grant finalists have been selected. A summary of each are outlined below. The grants will be awarded at the final Our Upstate Vision Forum: Celebrating Successes on November 29th at the Greenville Marriott. Register below!
Under the Pickens Historic Water Tower - City of Pickens:
Social interaction is an essential part of life in any thriving community. Individuals chat around the water cooler at work, animals gather around the watering hole in the wild, and in downtown Pickens we would like for our community to congregate under the historic water tower as one of the main social gathering locations downtown. The City would use the Elevate Upstate Grant to create a social gathering spot in downtown which would better serve our local businesses, who have expressed an interest in utilizing this space. The water tower has a central location to several downtown restaurants and this project would create a patio outdoor dining area for anyone to use. Creating this outdoor area will allow for people to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere while also providing a unique and historic perspective.
F.R.E.S.H. (FOOD RESOURCES ENSURING SATISFACTORY HEALTH) - Anderson Free Clinic:
Healthy communities are vibrant communities! The Anderson Free Clinic would create a "Farm to Table" style event to promote awareness of food insecurity in low access communities in Anderson County. The event would feature local farms and food products. By working with local partners, the clinic could lead collaborative efforts addressing the nutrition needs of our patients and community.
Research shows that patients are at an increased risk of poor health outcomes and chronic disease due to poor nutrition and diet. The clinic would add screening of patients for food insecurity and create a resource to support the awareness of healthy food choices.
Hub Crawl Interactive Games
(Spartanburg) - Hub-Bub:
As a part of HUB-BUB's Downtown Programming Initiative, local artists will design an inventory of interactive games that can be used in partnership with the Hub Crawl series, a recurring event meant to inspire creative interactions and promote the Downtown Spartanburg area.
Family Fun Day (Union & Spartanburg) - Children & Choices/Hello Saville:
The Family Fun Day Project will serve as a safe opportunity for families to gather for positive fun, an exchange of information as well as a time for youth to have increased exposure to positive and caring adults. It will include a series of fun activities over a six month period, including a "MLK History Game & Skate Day", "Family Trivia Night", "Family Movie Night & Earth Day Awareness" and "Retro Skate Day".
Expand Your Wings - Town of West Pelzer:
The Town of West Pelzer is established and declared to be a wild bird sanctuary. "Expand Your Wings" is both an educational venture and an art installation that will allow residents, visitors and passersby to West Pelzer to "Become like a bird, expand your wings, learn new things and fly high as you can."

OUR UPSTATE VISION FORUM:
CELEBRATING SUCCESSES
NOVEMBER 29TH

The Our Upstate Vision Forum Series typically looks at issues that are crucial as the region strives to be universally recognized as a leading place to live, learn, do business and raise a family. Earlier this year, our session focused on the Untapped Workforce in the Upstate.
While it is critical to look at areas where we must continue to work to make the Upstate an even better place for generations to come, it is also important that we take opportunities to recognize and understand some of the great things from our past and that are happening today in our region.
Each year, the final Our Upstate Forum provides a chance to celebrate some of the people, organizations and businesses that have been working for generations to make the Upstate a special place.
The forum will include recognition of companies and organizations celebrating milestone anniversaries (20 years or more) in 2016. Ten at the Top will also announce the recipients of the 2016 Hughes Investments ELEVATE UPSTATE Grants and other regional awards.
The event will take place:
2:30-4:30 p.m. on November 29, 2016

Building a Bridge from Graduate to Employee
Thursday, November 10th
Please join other Upstate business leaders, school district Superintendents and school board members, and economic and workforce development organization representatives for an interactive discussion about bridging the gap between the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate and the needs of our region's business and industry.
Local Business Leaders Panel Discussion: What characteristics are the Upstate's businesses looking for when hiring recent graduates?
Table Exercise: What are the consistencies, or differences, between the Profile of the South Carolina graduate and what local businesses need? How can we bridge the gap to ensure students are prepared for employment?

UPSTATE BUS TOUR... GETTING TO KNOW OUR NEIGHBORS RECAP - CHEROKEE COUNTY
|
 The Getting to Know Our Neighbors Upstate Bus Tour made a stop in Cherokee County on November 3rd with participants seeing first-hand some of the great things going on within that Upstate county.
The tour included a stop at the new Dollar Tree Distribution Center, which is 1.5 million square foot facility opened earlier this year. A business with a much longer, 45 year, history in Cherokee County is Timken and the day also included a visit from the Cherokee Plant Manager John Milko.
Cherokee County is home to three National Parks and attendees visited the Cowpens National Battlefield while getting a demonstration on loading and shooting a revolutionary war era musket.
Like the other counties in the Upstate, providing training that creates a skilled workforce is an important issue in Cherokee County and the tour included a stop at the Spartanburg Community College Cherokee Campus and greetings from SCC President Henry Giles. Also as part of the day, attendees visited the beautiful Limestone College campus and visited with Limestone President Dr. Walt Griffin.
The Know2 initiative has been an important catalyst to community change in Cherokee County and one outcome of the initiative has been the creation of the bGEN business incubator in Downtown Gaffney.
Another Downtown Gaffney revitalization effort was the purchase and renovation of the old post office to serve as the Gaffney Visitors Center and Art Gallery. Mayor Henry Jolly shared the history of the facility before participants enjoyed the current exhibit by renowned South Carolina artist Robert Wilson.
Special thanks to the Cherokee County Development Board, Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce and City of Gaffney for helping organize the day.
The Upstate Bus Tours will continue in 2017 with trips to Anderson County, Abbeville County and Greenville County.

UPSTATE ELECTED OFFICIALS MEETING RECAP
|
The recent Upstate Elected Officials meeting allowed the region's elected officials to give their input on growth trends within their communities as well as future growth projected for the Upstate over the next 25 years. The interactive format of the meeting allowed for officials' opinions/answers to be immediately aggregated and then viewed by all as a part of the PowerPoint presentation. Please

The information provided by elected officials during this meeting will help inform the
Shaping Our Future Growth Scenarios Analysis Project. The project is being led by Upstate Forever, Ten at the Top, and the Riley Institute at Furman to study growth and development alternatives for the Upstate. The analysis will include a comprehensive assessment of current policies, market forces, and development preferences to illustrate how continued growth under the trend scenario might
influence the cost of government, shape infrastructure, support and/or limit economic development initiatives, or impact the environment.
This project is made possible by generous funding support from Hollingsworth Funds, Greater Greenville Association of Realtors, and New Belgium Brewing Company.
