ARTICLE HEADING

Dear CCDS Families,

There is a particular flow and feel to the school year and this time of year might just be my favorite. Projects are getting close to completion, students are preparing for exhibition, and there is an exciting energy in the air. As we all move forward with Project Based Learning, the piece that excites me the most is how it supports students in articulating their learning with an authentic audience at exhibition. Our adult community plays an important role in this piece.

November and December will be highlighted by the culmination of many meaningful and purposeful projects for our students. Exhibitions will be happening at various times and locations depending on the grade-level and project. Please be on the lookout for specific dates, times, and locations for upcoming exhibitions from your student's teacher.

Exhibition, creating a chance for student work to have a meaningful and authentic audience, is a cornerstone to Project Based Learning. This is a process that allows students to articulate their learning, reflect on their process, and showcase their final products. The deep conversations around the learning and the work are a key shift that supports student learning in a very meaningful way.

Your role for Exhibition:
We need you to be an audience for your student of course, but we also need you to be an audience for the other students at the exhibition. Please engage in conversations with a variety of students.  Nothing helps elevate student work like having an authentic audience and you play a key role in that!

Some general questions you may want to ask:
What did you learn through this project?
Why did you learn about this?
Why did you make the choice to ______________?
What did you like best about _________?
What was challenging for you in this project?

We are so grateful to have you all as participators in student learning through events like exhibition. We look forward to seeing you at these events and hearing from students about their learning experiences.

Warmly,
Wendy

School Loading Zones
School loading zones are established for safety and efficiency. CCDS loading zones run the length of 11th Street from Park to Broadway and from 11th and Broadway to our parking lot.
Please follow the rules of the 3 minute loading zone,
if you need to wait longer than 3 minutes, loop around to keep the flow of traffic.

Making a Difference
Our cafeteria Manager, Stephanie Bolduc, recently wrote a letter to Michelle Obama about food waste in school cafeterias. A reply came in the mail last week. It is great to be acknowledged. Click on the photo to read the letter.  Kudos to Stephanie for doing her best to make a difference!

Attendance Update

We want to express our gratitude to everyone who makes it possible for as many students as possible to come to school every day, on time and ready to learn. This is paramount for student success!  Check out this  Attendance Video.

Thank you to:
  • Our students and families for making daily attendance a priority since they know the habit of attendance will help them do well in the classroom and eventually in a job.
  • Our wonderful teachers who pour their energy into making each classroom an exciting place for exploration and knowledge so children do not want to miss out on learning
We also hope you will keep in mind that school is closed on November 10 for parent conferences, November 11 for Veteran's Day, as well as November 21-25 for Thanksgiving break.  School reopens November 28.

We especially appreciate everyone's efforts to avoid taking extra days off during the Thanksgiving holiday. Just a few missed days here and there, even if they're excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and leave your child behind in school. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school.

Along this subject, we will be providing attendance and punctuality incentives through the year. At the end of each trimester (K-5) or semester (6-8) there will be drawings for students with no tardies and intermittent drawings for students with no absences. Culminating the year, we will award Gold Level Attendance Awards for perfect attendance and Silver Level Attendance Awards for students with only one absence or tardy. The first drawings will occur in November!
LotteryAdmissionsMeeting
2017-2018 Admissions

Admissions/Lottery Information Night
An Admission/Lottery Information Meeting has been scheduled for Monday, November 7 in the Middle School Common Area at 6 p.m.  This is an opportunity for new families to learn more about CCDS and our lottery process.  Mrs. Fairon will be leading the meeting and there will be an opportunity to tour both schools and fill out a lottery application. To RSVP for this meeting, please click here.

Remember, that if you have a child already in CCDS, your kindergartener is already in; however, a completed application is required to hold your child's spot.  Please see below for more information.

Calling All CCDS Siblings
The 2017-18 School Application is now available on the CCDS website and in the main office. You may also click here to download . Because you are a returning family, you do not need to fill out the proof of residency which will be on the back of the application.

Do you have a child enrolled in CCDS and another who will be ready for kindergarten in the fall of 2017?

We need to reserve kindergarten spaces for all the younger siblings coming into CCDS.

Please fill out the school application and return to Stacy in the main office. When filling out the application, note the name of your other children attending CCDS.

To enter kindergarten, children need to be 5 by September 1, 2017.
Local Native American Studies in 3rd Grade

Kate and Thaddeus, members of the Konkow Maidu Cultural
Maidu Cultural Preservation Association, shared a special skill with the 3rd Graders during their recent visit. Third graders are learning about the historical aspects of the Maidu People, but also learning to appreciate their desire for preserving their culture that still exists today.  Kate and Thaddeus taught the students how to make usable rope out of cedar bark, a natural resource in our area.  They also shared other resources, games, a song, and some words from their language.

 Harvest Fair a Success!

Thank you to all who were involved in making the Harvest Fair a great success this year! The booths were amazing and despite the rain, everyone had a great time and guess what... the total proceeds were $3753.86! The winner of the best decorated booth contest was the cookie decorating booth manned by the Leadership Class. They will be receiving a hot chocolate party soon.

Check out the photos below to see some of the happy faces.  A big thank you to PTP, CCDS Staff, and all the volunteers who organized classroom booths, donated items to various parts of the fair and helped during the day. Our community is awesome! An event like this continues to reinforce our community strength and spirit.

A very special thank you to the Harvest Fair Planning Committee: Diana Markham, Linda Patterson, Caitlyn Torres, Breinne Kavanagh, and Bridget Cox. We couldn't have done it without you!

Cheers to a job well done!

Auction for Excellence 2017

The 20th annual Auction for Excellence will be held Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Manzanita Place. The auction committee has already been meeting to prepare for our school's largest fundraising event. As always, your support is necessary to make this event a success. We've identified the following areas where we could use more volunteers:

Runners/Spotters : For this position, you will need to be available during the live auction portion of the event to help identify bidders. 4 volunteers needed

Large Item Coordinators : Every year, we have amazing - and large - items available for bidding. The Large Item Coordinator will be available during the live auction to ensure that the winning bidder of these large items has a plan for getting their prize back home. 2 volunteers needed

Bankers : You will assist our Banking Chair with each bidder's payment for items. Your help is needed after close of the silent auction tables, and after live auction bidding ends. The more help with this one, the better to ensure short payment lines. 4 volunteers needed

Online Auction Coordinators : We will again provide an online auction after our live event. We need your help taking pictures of items, writing descriptions, and uploading the information during the 2-3 weeks prior to the auction - flexible hours.   2 volunteers needed.
*You do not need to attend the auction to volunteer for this position.

Aside from these positions, we always need help gathering items for bidding. Do you have any connections to local businesses? A rental property that you would like to offer for a weekend? A special talent you'd be willing to share? We want to hear from you! We also need assistance the day of the event for both set up and clean up. If you are able to support this event in any way, please contact us as soon as possible:

Stacey Owen - auction co-chair
Irene Henkens - auction co-chair
Lisa Hoppe - Family/Community liaison

 SPORTS UPDATE

Dear CCDS families,

Chris Nixon has been with our athletics program for six years. He started out as our boys' coach and for the past four seasons has led both boys and girls basketball teams along with Coach Jordan Williams.  Chris has accepted a position at Chico High School as the freshman girls' coach. As much as we are excited for Coach Nixon as he takes this next step in his journey, we are saddened to see him go.  Coach Nixon is a very loyal person and wants to make sure our program continues to flourish. We are so fortunate that he will still be working with us as our 8th grade girls coach. Unfortunately, the season conflicts at Chico High are too many for him to continue working with our boys.  We wish Chris all the best in his new endeavor.

Jordan Williams who has worked with Coach Nixon for the past five seasons will be filling the role as our 8th grade boys' coach, and our very own JT Linnet will be joining the team. JT will be our head 7th grade boys coach and assisting Jordan with the 8th grade team. We are all very excited to have JT step into this role.

We have had a very strong basketball program for the past six years and we know this tradition will continue!

CCDS Joins the Chico Light Parade in
Honor of  20 Years Strong

What an amazing evening this turned out to be! Around 75 CCDS students/parents showed up with their CCDS spirit and walked behind our awesome float.  The float was designed by the Leadership Class with the help of Stuart Langford. White Ranch loaned a trailer and parent Mike Lewis pulled the float which held teachers, kids and parents singing this year's theme song. This turned out to be a great community event that we hope to continue.  Big thank you's to Dave Davis, the leadership class, Colly Fischer, the PTP officers, Stuart Langford, Lorrie Mathews, Anne Marie Chik, Beth Colwell, White Ranch, and Mike Lewis.
