Legislative Update

County Expands Sick and Safe Law to Cover "Parental Purposes" - On November 1, the Montgomery County Council unanimously approved expedited legislation to amend the "Earned Sick and Safe Leave Act" (which took effect on October 1) to allow sick leave to be used for "parental purposes." The amendment took effect immediately and allows eligible employees to use accrued sick and safe leave: (i) for the birth of a child, or for the placement of a child with the employee for adoption or foster care and (ii) to care for a newborn, newly adopted, or newly placed child within one year of birth, adoption or placement. Click here to read the bill. Employers are urged to update their personnel policies immediately to reflect this change.

Restaurants Now Required to Have Food Allergens Training - The County Council passed legislation last week requiring all restaurants and food establishments to have on premises an employee who has completed a food allergen awareness training course and passed a test approved by the County Department of Health and Human Services.
