Nick is a Fire Captain in the Lassen-Modoc Unit. He has been with the CAL FIRE for 18 years
and
started in 2000.
He began working
for CAL FIRE while he was in school - like so many others have done. It
didn't take long for him to realize
that this was a great career
and
decided
to make this his full time job. The station life and the bond that is built with others
,
not just around the station but across the state
,
speaks volumes for what people mean when they talk about the "brotherhood
"
.
Nick has been a union officer since
around
2007. He started off as the chapter secretary-treasurer and then was the chapter rank and file rep for a few years. He just recently took over the alternate chapter director position.
His union involvement began
when he was a
young firefighter complain
ing
about union dues. His Captain at the time
,
Aaron Burrough
,
told him if
you
don't like it, then get involved. That winter he joined Aaron at a
Local 2881
Convention where his eyes were opened to how much goes on during that week. Aaron and Tom McConnel
(
the District 2 VP
at the time
)
took him under their wing and answered all of the many questions he had. It wasn't long after Convention that he had a much better understanding of what the union and
his
union dues did, not only for
himself
but all the other members across the State.
Nick enjoys the outdoors and socializing with family and friends in his spare time. He spends the Fall season hunting. He enjoys waterfowl hunting and his annual trip to Colorado chasing down deer and elk. He also enjoys trying to get better at golf, although that looks like it may not happen. During the Summer season, if he is able to get off, he spends his time camping and relaxing at Lake Almanor.
