Meet Nick Garcia
Lassen-Modoc Alternate Chapter Director

Nick is a Fire Captain in the Lassen-Modoc Unit.  He has been with the CAL FIRE for 18 years and started in 2000.   He began working for CAL FIRE while he was in school - like so many others have done.  It didn't take long for him to realize that this was a great career  and decided to make this his full time job.  The station life and the bond that is built with others , not just around the station but across the state , speaks volumes for what people mean when they talk about the "brotherhood " .

Nick has been a union officer since around 2007.  He started off as the chapter secretary-treasurer and then was the chapter rank and file rep for a few years.  He just recently took over the alternate chapter director position.

His union involvement began when he was a young firefighter complain ing about union dues.  His Captain at the time , Aaron Burrough , told him if you don't like it, then get involved.  That winter he joined Aaron at a Local 2881 Convention where his eyes were opened to how much goes on during that week.  Aaron and Tom McConnel ( the District 2 VP  at the time ) took him under their wing and answered all of the many questions he had.  It wasn't long after Convention that he had a much better understanding of what the union and his union dues did, not only for himself but all the other members across the State.

Nick enjoys the outdoors and socializing with family and friends in his spare time.  He spends the Fall season hunting.  He enjoys waterfowl hunting and his annual trip to Colorado chasing down deer and elk.  He also enjoys trying to get better at golf, although that looks like it may not happen.  During the Summer season, if he is able to get off, he spends his time camping and relaxing at Lake Almanor.

Thank you Nick for sharing with us!

A MEMBER IN NEED!

About 3 years ago, Christian was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis or A.S. for short. A.S. is an autoimmune disease that eventually destroys the spine, not only that it can eventually affect the joints, eyesight, liver, and kidney functions. There is no known cure for A.S. just medication to slow the progress and pain management for the pain. Christian's family and he have been struggling with this and it has progressively gotten worse.

As many of you know Christian had a fall which left him hospitalized for almost 3 months in severe pain having to learn to walk again. From being bed bound and in a wheelchair it was really hard to deal with. After leaving the hospital's rehab in February '16 from his fall the A.S. has made recovery very slow. Christian was donated a wheelchair lift by a friend and church member from the Pleasant Hill Adventist Church which he was using until his SUV's transmission broke. According to specialist Christian had a spinal cord contusion with a mild concussion when he fell back on October 29, '15 and which left him hospitalized after that.

FIREFIGHTERS HELP CLEAN UP RETARDANT DROPPED ON MORENO VALLEY HOMES THREATENED BY BLAINE FIRE
THE PRESS-ENTERPRISE, 8/14/2017

With flames from the 1,044-acre Blaine fire burning fast down the Box Springs Mountains toward a Moreno Valley neighborhood Sunday, firefighters resorted to a rare tactic: dropping fire retardant directly onto houses.

It worked - only one house sustained minor damage, from embers that got into its attic.

But it left several streets in the Hidden Springs area covered in reddish-pink Phos-Chek retardant.

"It was like blood," resident Tony Hernandez said.
