TIFTON HONORS VETERANS TODAY
VETERANS DAY CEREMONY AT 11 A.M. DOWNTOWN

The City of Tifton holds its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. today (Friday, Nov. 11) in Veterans Park in Downtown Tifton. Dr. David Bridges, president of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, will be the keynote speaker.

ABAC has a multifaceted Veterans Initiative underway, and Bridges recently opened the Freedom Gallery at the college honoring alumni who served in the military.

During today's Veterans Day ceremony, local singer Brenda Saunders will perform the National Anthem and "God Bless the USA," and Megan DuBose will perform "Taps." The Tift County Sheriff's Honor Guard will post the colors during the ceremony.

Veterans Day has its beginnings in World War I; on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany during that conflict.

Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, Nov. 11 became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

TRUMP GETS HIGHER PERCENTAGE IN TIFT THAN IN GA

Tift County followed the state in its voting on Tuesday, although President-Elect Donald J. Trump received a larger percentage of the vote in Tift than he did statewide, according to unofficial returns from the Ga. Secretary of State's Office.

In Tift County, Trump got 9,565 votes, or 67.69 percent; he won Georgia with 51.11 percent of the vote.

Tift County also followed along with statewide voting in defeating proposed Amendment No. 1 which would have created Opportunity School Districts for failing schools. The proposal was defeated 62.43 percent to 37.57 percent in Tift, and defeated 59.95 percent to 40.05 percent throughout Georgia.

The other three amendments were OK'd both in Tift and statewide.

Republican Clay Pate was elected Tift County Superior Court clerk with 9,564 votes to 4,094 for Democrat Gail Taylor Drayton.

Also, incumbents re-elected included U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson (54.86 percent statewide); U.S. Rep. Austin Scott (67.73 percent district-wide); and state Sen. Greg Kirk (72.1 percent district-wide).

In Tift County, 14,290 citizens voted out of 19,040 registered voters, or a 75.05 percent turnout. Statewide, the turnout was 76.25 percent, or nearly 4.2 million ballots cast.

PROCESS

Annie Belle Clark Primary School third-graders held a mock election on election day Tuesday

All the students brought their ID cards to the voting precinct (cafeteria). They then "cast their vote" electronically on laptops set up on the stage.
