TIFTON HONORS VETERANS TODAY
VETERANS DAY CEREMONY AT 11 A.M. DOWNTOWN
The
City of Tifton holds its annual
Veterans Day ceremony at
11 a.m. today (Friday, Nov. 11) in
Veterans Park in
Downtown Tifton. Dr.
David Bridges, president of
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, will be the keynote speaker.
ABAC has a multifaceted
Veterans Initiative underway, and Bridges recently opened the
Freedom Gallery at the college honoring alumni who served in the military.
During today's
Veterans Day ceremony, local singer
Brenda Saunders will perform the
National Anthem and
"God Bless the USA," and
Megan DuBose will perform
"Taps." The
Tift County Sheriff's Honor Guard will post the colors during the ceremony.
Veterans Day has its beginnings in
World War I; on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of
1918, an
armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the
Allied nations and
Germany during that conflict.
Commemorated as
Armistice Day beginning the following year,
Nov. 11 became a legal federal holiday in the
United States in
1938. In the aftermath of
World War II and the
Korean War, Armistice Day became
Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American
veterans of all wars.
