Broward based nephrologist launches interactive health IT solution
|
Like a lot of innovative ideas,
Dr. Naveen Goel's inspiration grew out of a frustration with the status quo.
As a busy Plantation based interventional nephrologist, he ran into the usual dysfunction of the American healthcare system: difficulty sharing health information with other providers and patients, episodic care that failed to properly treat chronic conditions plus disengaged and uninformed patients, ill-prepared to contribute to their own health maintenance.
Dr. Goel saw the inefficiencies from the patient perspective as well. He watched aging family members, despite competent and caring providers, suffer due to poor coordination of care, botched medication management plus unnecessary office visits and avoidable hospital admissions.
He began to envision what an efficient, patient focused system would look like:
- Seamless information sharing with the healthcare team
- Continuous monitoring instead of episodes of care
- Care coordination with informed and empowered patients at the center
The current push towards value based care combined with major information technology advances created an opportunity for Dr. Goel to make a difference. He shared his vision with his old friend
Sanjay Deo, a healthcare IT specialist. Mr. Deo wrote the computer code that brought Dr. Goel's idea from concept to reality. Their creation, called
HealthKOS (
