Hosted by the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education and The Africa Center, The Africa-America Institute will host a symposium, "The Future of African Leadership -- Assessing Leadership Development on the Continent", exploring the tremendous possibilities and challenges to African leadership.
The symposium will feature:
- A case study on Leadership Development on the African continent;
- Strengths-based Leadership & the Challenge with Deficit-Oriented Models for Leadership Development;
- Evaluating Leadership Development Programs panel discussion; and
- A special presentation on "The Impact of Leadership Development Programs in Africa", highlighting key findings and recommendations from AAI's evaluation study, The Transformational Leadership Program: An Evaluation of Impact in Capacity Building Leadership Program for Africa's Social Sector.

USF in Brazil 2015 Summer Program
Afro-Brazilian Culture, Portuguese Language, and Service-Learning!
Salvador, Bahia, Brazil
June 10 -July 11, 2015
As part of the University of South Florida's initiative on Afro-Descendants in Latin America, we are organizing our third annual USF in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil program. Salvador is a UNESCO Heritage Site, located in the northeastern region of Brazil, and it is characterized by a unique blend of African, European, and Indigenous cultures. This program offers an intensive four week summer immersion program in two courses: 1) Afro-Brazilian culture and society and 2) Portuguese Language, so students can earn 6 credits. The Afro-Brazilian culture and society course will be taught with an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from sociology, political science, and anthropology to study contemporary issues such as racial discrimination, environmental justice, and social movements. This program is unique because students will live with Brazilian families in a home-stay arrangement and participate in service-learning with the community organization, Instituto Steve Biko. There are excursions to nearby towns (Cachoeira and the Island of Itapar�ca) and opportunities to participate in cultural activities such as capoeira. We welcome graduate and undergraduate students from across the country to participate in the USF in Brazil program.

The African and Diasporic Religious Studies Association (ADRSA) presents its third day-long conference on the theme African and Diasporic Spiritual Soundscapes. Coined by R. Murray Schafer, the term soundscape refers to a combination of sounds that inhabit an environment. Songs, stomps, chants, claps, rhythmic breaths, animal sounds, ringing bells, prayers, shaking rattles, shouts, laughter, rustles of leaves, pounding of pestle on mortar, and more comprise the soundscapes of African and Diasporic Religious practice. This conference will investigate and celebrate these sounds, the aural tapestries they weave, and the ways in which they are integral to our understandings of the worldsenses contained in these rich traditions.

University of Florida African American Studies Program Lecturer

The African-American Studies Program at the University of Florida is seeking a full-time lecturer in a non-tenure accruing position with a renewable nine-month contract. The position will begin in the Fall semester 2015. The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses per semester, including at least one of the Program's core courses: introduction to African-American Studies course, Key Issues in African-American and Black-Atlantic Thought, African-American Studies Senior Integrative Seminar. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in African-American Studies or a related academic field, demonstrated experience in teaching African-American Studies courses, a record of service related to the discipline of African-American Studies, and the ability to develop and teach online courses. Disciplinary backgrounds may include, but are not restricted to the following: anthropology, criminal justice, Diaspora studies, economics, history, literature and culture, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, urban studies, women's studies. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and include a full benefits package. The African American Studies Program, which was established in 1969, has five core faculty members, and 10 faculty affiliates. The program currently offers a major and a minor in African American Studies and is housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The program emphasizes exceptional teaching, outstanding scholarly research, and service. The University of Florida is one of only 17 public, land-grant universities that belong to the American Association of Universities, with 16 colleges and more than 100 research, service, and education centers.
