Black Lives Matter? Africana Religious Responses to State Violence
The violent deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown have prompted religious responses to assaults against black people by government-related actors and institutions not only across the African diaspora but also in various African countries. How have African, African American, and African diasporic religious institutions, leaders, practitioners, activists, and theologies responded to state violence throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries? How might we compare these various responses across the range of Africana religious traditions, including Christianity, Islam, Orisha and other African "traditional" religions, Judaism, Hinduism, and so on? What theories and methods of study are useful in understanding Africana religious responses to state violence?
The Journal of Africana Religions, which is officially co-sponsored by ASWAD,invites 3,000-word essays that answer such questions. Various approaches to analyzing Africana religious responses to state violence are welcome, though essays that attempt to understand responses from a transnational and global Africana perspective are especially encouraged. Essays are due by a hard deadline of May 31, 2015. Essays must be double-spaced and follow Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition.
