Dear Friends,

At Gratz, we are very excited about the upcoming Arnold and Esther Tuzman Memorial Holocaust Teach-In. This biennial event, which commemorates Kristallnacht, draws throngs of people to the College for insightful programming on Holocaust and genocide-related topics.

In recognition of the Teach-In, all the columns in this issue of The Insider have some connection to the Holocaust, whether it's the story of the Gratz alumna who is preserving the music of Holocaust-era composers, or the thoughtful piece by Professor Michael Steinlauf on Jewish memory work in Poland, or the recipe for plum cake from a Holocaust survivor. There's also a review of the new film "Denial," based on the legal battle against Holocaust denial fought by Deborah Lipstadt, who is the keynote speaker at our Holocaust Teach-In.

Thank you for your enthusiastic support of the Teach-In.

Warmly,

Alumni Spotlight on Dr. Lori Shipley: Giving Life to Music Lost in the Holocaust
Dr. Lori Shipley
Dutch composer Marius Flothuis was a prisoner in a concentration camp in the Netherlands. In 1944, he composed a piece as a birthday gift for a flutist and fellow prisoner. Although the flutist did not survive, the musical composition did. This piece will be played at the Holocaust Teach-In by Dr. Lori Shipley, a Gratz alumna dedicated to preserving the music of victims of the Holocaust. Read more.
