Our Program for Tuesday, November 8

The program will be Bliss Littler, the coach and general manager of the Wenatchee Wild hockey team.

Bliss Littler
Head Coach and General Manager

With twenty three years of experience, Wenatchee Wild Head Coach/General Manager
Bliss Littler
is USA Hockey's all time Tier 1 and Tier 2 winningest coach, with 706 wins to date through the 2015-16 season. The last four of those years have been in the northwest with the Wenatchee Wild.

Prior to arriving in Wenatchee, Bliss spent eleven years in the United States Hockey League as a Head Coach/General Manager with the Omaha Lancers, Tri City Storm, and the Topeka Scarecrows. Five times he served as a coach for USA Hockey in international competitions. He launched his coaching career by spending seven years with the Billings Bulls of the AFHL and AWHL where he won five Borne Cups. He sported an overall record of 326-210-59 in the USHL, winning one Anderson Cup. In his career, he has coached over three hundred players that have moved on to play Division I hockey. He has also coached twenty five NHL draft picks including two first round picks. He's seen over twenty of his former players advance to the NHL. He also holds a Bachelor Degree in General Studies from Minot State University.

Bliss is married to his wife Gretchen, and they have two children, Cade and Grace. They make their full time home in the Wenatchee Valley.

LONDON - October 30, 2016: In an unexpected televised address on Saturday, Queen Elizabeth II offered to restore British rule over the United States of America.

Addressing the American people from her office in Buckingham Palace, the Queen said that she was making the offer "in recognition of the desperate situation you now find yourselves in." "This two-hundred-and-forty-year experiment in self-rule began with the best of intentions, but I think we can all agree that it didn't end well," she said.

The Queen urged Americans to write in her name on Election Day, after which the transition to British rule could begin "with a minimum of bother."
Elizabeth acknowledged that, in the wake of Brexit, Americans might justifiably be alarmed about being governed by the British parliamentary system, but she reassured them, "Parliament would play no role in this deal. This would be an old-school monarchy. Just me, and then, assuming you'd rather not have Charles, we could go straight to William and those children of his who have mesmerized you so."

Using the closing moments of her speech to tout her credentials, the Queen made it clear that she has never used e-mail.

November 19 is World Toilet Day

Water and Sanitation - WASRAG's raison d'etre.  In our early years the focus was often on water.  Now however we've come to realize that sanitation is just as important, maybe even more so.

Such a basic human need - everyone visits the toilet several times a day. Yet, the impact of inadequate (or no) sanitation, especially on women, is devastating. One in three women worldwide risk shame, disease, harassment and even attack because they have nowhere safe to go to the toilet. Some 526 million women have no choice but to go to the toilet in the open. Women and girls living without any toilets spend approximately 97 billion hours each year "finding a place to go".

This has to be an irresistible challenge for Rotarians! The very first Rotary public service project instituted in Chicago in 1907 was the construction of public toilets (often coyly referred to as "comfort stations" in those days!).

Nowhere is sanitation more critical than in Kenya.  At Nkoilale Primary School they have 10 open pit toilets used by 907 students and no hand washing facilities.

Attendance

I hope these columns are helping you understand the larger world of Rotary and some of the working details of our own club. Friendship is a cornerstone of Rotary.

By meeting weekly, Rotarians get to know each other personally and professionally and are able to exchange ideas and discover (and celebrate) diverse perspectives. We learn from and enjoy outstanding programs and speakers.

Our members' weekly participation provides the maximum benefit to all of us. Rotary has an attendance requirement of at least 50%, but we know of many "old time" Rotarians who can claim over fifty years of perfect attendance!

If we are unable to attend a meeting, we can "make up" in a variety of ways which add to our Rotary experience and count toward our attendance requirement. One common way to make up is to visit another Rotary club, even an online "e-club," within 14 days before or after missing a regular club meeting. Neighboring clubs are easy to find on the list below or our district website. If we are traveling, we can check the Rotary International website and click on Club Finder , found directly under the blue box on the right when you click on the three bar search engine.  We can also download the free "Rotary Club Locator" app on our cell phone. This function lists every club in the world with an online presence, indicating where and when they meet with a link to the club website.

Visiting an international club provides an opportunity to connect with leaders from all continents, cultures and occupations. We are welcome at Rotary meetings anywhere in the world. It is quite a moment to experience the international network of Rotary. When planning travel abroad, request a club banner from our club secretary to present to the Rotary club president where you visit. You may also be offered a club banner from the foreign club to bring back to us. Don't forget to wear your RI pin!

Another way to make up a missed meeting is to attend a club social event, committee meeting, or club project. We encourage you to include your spouse, partner or family members to strengthen our friendships and our network through the "Family of Rotary." Be sure to report your make up to our club secretary.

With all these options, it is easy to exceed the minimum 50% attendance requirement. One never knows where the opportunity to meet new Rotarians and take part in creating positive change in our communities will lead.
